Pyramid"s Road Cairo, Egypt

It is smoggy, sunny, and quite cool. I begin to wish I had brought more sweaters. Our first stop is the Egyptian Museum. The museum itself is very interesting as a museum -the cards and displays seem to date to the 1920s. The cases against the walls, in the middle of the room, are stuffed with artifacts of various types, all thousands of years old. Though organized by Kingdom, there are no displays that provide context or background. We spend much of our time in the King Tutankhamen treasure ...
Cairo, Egypt ahartry We're in Egypt! We’ve taken our family vacation early this year. Here’s how it happened: coming home from La Colle sur Loup in France last Fall, the TWA flight out of Paris was overbooked. We volunteered to get "bumped", and all four of us were. What a blessing that turned out to be! It earned us four system-wide vouchers good for anywhere the airline flies. We decided to try to go as far as we could. Saudi Arabia didn’t interest us, but Egypt did….
So here we ...

Cairo, Egypt richfrohl... and then demanded money, they followed us for blocks, they yelled angrily at us when we said no. Displaying any sort of interest in an item and then not buying it invited even worse attention. Once, a guy even followed us to dinner, and tried to re-order our meals in Arabic to include him! When Chad told him to go away, he yelled “you go away, this is my country!” (Chad replied…”gladly!”)

Sweaty, dusty and ...
Cairo, Egypt chadsteph... to catch it before it hurt her. But really, this just makes life more fun, right?

So I know what you're thinking - sure, your apartment is falling apart at the seams, but outside of the apartment is surely better, right? Of course! Unless you need money from the ATM, which eats every single debit card that is put into it, like my roommate's card at a hotel ATM. We tried to get the hotel to open up the ATM to get it back, but they told us to call ...
Cairo, Al Qāhirah, Egypt cairo_in_hd... and is only 30 pounds for students which is quite awesome. I late found out that all monuments in Egypt are about 50% off for students. Score. The Saqqara complex is unique as it is still an active excavation site. You will see people with wheelbarrels and axes digging away all over the place. The downside is they also allow the touts in who will try and show you around or give you camel rides in exchange for money. I fell for this one, albeit on purpose, as he put ...
Cairo, Al Qahirah, Egypt jeremystravels... everyone wants to touch you, and everyone (okay, just young men) takes cell phone pictures of you. Those last two are definitely creepy and uncomfortable. We intended to take the subway to the train station to buy our tickets to Giza. We got to the subway station and waited for the train. When the first train pulled up we were horrified by how crowded itwas, people were hanging out the doors and windows. The subways in Cairo actually have cars that are just for women. The all ...

Cairo, Egypt melano... to fully implying that the whole thing was a mistake (he essentially said that). He called out Arab governments. He pledged to work to change the prejudiced culture of America and he showed more respect than perhaps any president before to a religion that Americans in so many ways unfairly mistrust. He admitted that Iran does have a right to use nuclear power for peaceful means, if not a weapon. And he didn't mention terrorists or Islamofacists or any of ...
Cairo, Egypt jimmyandkristen... the King Tut exhibit when it was in Chicago, and thought it was amazing. It doesn’t even compare to the quantity and splendor of Cairo's. Gilded thrones, beds, chariots, statues of kings, statues of servants, statues of gods, etc and even more amazing, King Tut’s solid gold mask which was placed on his head in his solid gold sarcophagus which then went into a wooden but gold leaf painted larger sarcophagus. As if that weren’t splendid enough ...
