Alcoutim, Algarve, Portugal wrklein... to make the (rather optimistic) 1km from the station seem like 5km. Finally we reached the end of a dusty road were our 4 star, 2 pool, 2 bar, 55 Euro bargain sat in all its air-conditioned glory. Whilst not exactly oozing charm, it was certainly good value. We're only here for the sea sand and Sagres afterall.

Tavira, a resort town, with a certain charm, a hint of Spanish chav and a short boat ride to the beach to dissuade the properly ...
Tavira, Algarve, Portugal warm... Atlantic. Lots of smallish waves roll in - not in sets like in Perth but just one wave after another. They weren't good enough to body surf but that didn't stop us from trying.

Friday sees us travelling by train to Faro then changing to the express to Lisbon to our apartment. And then a whole new adventure will start.

We trust all are well back in Perth.

Tavira, Algarve, Portugal chris_n_tony... s centre streets are cobbled, narrow and one-way. We´ve spent Sunday afternoon & evening and Monday just walking around the town, exploring and soaking up the atmosphere. Lots of coffees, pastries and beer. Food and drink is really cheap (expresso $1.10, beers are about $2.20 for a stubby).

We´ve been practising our very limited Portugese - I think we can say about 3 expressions so far! Locals seem to find our efforts amusing! :-)

Adeus
Tavira, Algarve, Portugal chris_n_tonyIt's 9.45 am local time as I step off the Ayamonte - Vila Real de Santo Antonio ferry. Officially I crossed the border from Spain into Portugal half way across the River Guadiana, but it doesn't feel as though I have fully completed my journey until I actually set foot on Portuguese soil. So here I am. I left Colchester, England on the morning of Saturday 18th April and at virtually the same time on Tuesday 19th May, I am at journey's end. No elation, just ...
Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal jamie_pete... I crossed the Rio Tinto I knew that I had completed the majority of the ride. (Red River: named because it is actually red from the copper deposits up in the sierra. Ever heard of the UK company Rio Tinto Zinc? Well this is where it got the first two thirds of its name. There is even an area of English style Victorian houses in Huelva that housed the British miners!) I was delighted to ride up to the hotel, especially ...

Tavira, Algarve, Portugal pille... hostel on the other side of the river in Alcoutim. As Marcus is still not feeling that great, we head acros the river and the nice old man drops us off at a dock just next to the hostel. WE arrive just as it starts to pour with rain, and gratefully settle in to a very cheap room all to ourselves in a massive new youth hostel, with a kung fu movie on TV (Marcus is happy anyway). 43km cycled, and a new speed record for Marcus (Sue, don't read on) - 70.5kph!!
