7th March 2003: After breakfast, we got our gear together and headed to the beach. Now you may know that I am not really a beach dweller, and so the thought of spending the day on the sand did not really appeal to me. It's not the fact that I don't like the sun. In fact my vanity even stretched to me using a tanning bed once a week whilst at uni, its just I find it incredibly boring to just lie down on a beach and do nothing. Though I must admit I did enjoy myself. Despite losing Steves frisb...
Pangkor/Penang, Malaysia countrybumpkinWell we made it in a day from Ko Lanta and got there in good time to have a nice tandoori set and lassi's before we went to bed! Job done! This was our smoothest border crossing yet and resulted in our last bit of Thai haggling in Hat Yai when we bought our bus ticket to Penang which was all good fun and highly successful after they tried to rip us off massively! Last chance I guess! Our first sight of Penang was from the car ferry and it was the first time we'd seen a skyline for a while fea...
Georgetown, Malaysia dawn_smedleyOur journey from the Cameron Highlands took us back along that awful route down the mountain. The driver tried to light cigarettes only on the most dangerous bits so we guess he must have been scared too. 6.5 hours later we arrived in Penang, an island just off Butterworth. As usual I couldn't be bothered to walk and we had been approached by a taxi driver so Pip looked over my shoulder and agreed a price. I couldn't work out why he asked if we would fit until I saw our vehicle which Pip had ...
Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia phil_and_lisaOk, So I have finally reached Malaysia after traveling on buses and minivans for almost 24 hours from Thailand. I am now in Georgetown, Penang. Accessible by ferry or over the Penang Bridge in a vehicle. The total length of the bridge is 13.5 km (8.4 miles), making it one of the longest bridges in the world. It is the longest bridge in the country as well as a national landmark. We got here about 8pm, so we checked into the nearest hotel, Oasis hotel. We had a shower, got ready, went to chang...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia sophia_fadilThe Petronas Twin Towers (also known as the Petronas Towers or just Twin Towers), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia are twin towers and were the world's tallest buildings, before being surpassed by Taipei 101. Wow! The Petronas towers were amazing. You have to lie down to see the top of the tower. One of the most spectacular things that I have ever seen!
Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia sophia_fadilThe pint sized woman comes in and out all day long asking if Robin wants Melo, a type of hot chocolate popular in Penang. This woman not more than four and half feet off the ground has a giant mole in the crease between her nose and cheek. She wears a hairnet and hospital garb in the same dreary blue color day after day. She is the last person we see before going to bed and the first person we see in the morning. "Melo? Melo?" She will ask. "No." "Don't want?" She will yell. "No. Thank you." ...
Penang, Malaysia taostothailandI'm standing on a scale in the teacher's lounge staring at the numbers. Ompak a fellow English teacher stands next to me holding a notepad and pencil. She informs me that I lost 2 kilos. She has been keeping track of my weight since I started teaching. My weight is the topic before lunch, after lunch and before I go home for the day. Malaysia must have been good for you she says. I look around for Robin. She is gone. She has gone back to the United States. I am taking a Thai aerobics class in...

Penang, Malaysia zalazala... of cheap accomodation. We find ourselves stepping over heaps of sleeping bodies - from those on the benches and in the doorways to the pedalo drivers tucked up in their vehicles. Within a few days we realise that in Georgetown, it's fairly standard for those who own a business to sleep in it every night. Including when that business is simply riding a bicycle. A wander around Georgetown reveals an incredibly interesting place to be. There are barely any pavements, but ...
