Hard work getting up today, partly because I lost two hours yesterday traveling through two time zones and second because it just seemed a bit ground hog day. ... destination: Astana. This little town was declared Kazakh capital in 1997 and since then they have been building a futuristic town in the middle of the steppe. The new town centre is a sea of concrete, glass, metal and very modern and bizarre architecture with the latest addition a leaning tent with indoor beach, oceanium, shopping centre and mini-golf. ... of town, with a mall on the doorstep and a short walk to most of the city's attractions. First up was a visit to a huge modern yurt (traditional Kazakh tent) called Khan Shatyr with a mall inside and a system to keep the temp constant at 22degs year round - with an outside temp that varies between -30 and 35. ... in my room after the tour, and prepare for a 1:30am departure to the airport. There are five of us flying Lufthansa to Frankfurt, and I have a quick connection to my Chicago-bound flight.
