... established we went off to town to wander around the magnificent old town and eventually have diner. How do the Italians turn a simple few ingredients into a marvellous meal? My pasta was to die for, eat much more and I probably will.... The old town is unbelievably beautiful, every street a potential postcard picture. I suspect we are going to see more in the next few weeks. Tomorrow we will be in Sicily.

... technique used in Lecce, a small figurine can take 25 days to make. I found a fabulous shop (not a tourist shop) with really interesting papier mache figurines. I would have like to buy one but in true Italian style, the shop was closed for siesta. Everything closing for 2 to 3 hours in the middle of the day is a pain in the **** when you are only visiting a city/town for the day. This doesn't happen in the big cities (Rome, Venice etc) but Lecce ...

Gallopili was an island fortress, with only a bridge link to the mainland. The castle was currently not open. However, we enjoyed walking around the walls, hanging onto hat and sunglasses so as not to have them blown away, retreating to the narrow streets when we needed a breather.

Into Lecce in inclement weather....out with the trusty umbrella. Needed an ATM urgently, as our 50 sontimes was insufficient for the parking attendant, who wanted payment in advance! Once that detail had been taken care of, repaired to a suitable cafe for coffee, chosen for the incredible looking bruschetta that other patrons were eating. A good choice. Thus fortified, headed out to view ...
