    Galle Fort

Went for an early walk along the fort ramparts this morning armed with my camera. Again lots of locals exercising. The main square was a hive of activity and I counted 7 bridal parties having photos taken - fully dressed and made-up at 7.30am! ...

... the experience although only 1 in 1000 survive to adulthood. The coast road to Galle is idilic. Crystal clear blue seas, golden beaches with coconut trees sway in the warm tropical breeze. However, every few yards there are sinister reminders of what happened here on the 26th December 2004. Ruined houses, graves, and the odd memorial are everywhere. As these were the last couple of days we had in the units we let them decide what they wanted to do. The girls on Tuesday taught me lots of Sri Lankan dance moves. It was so much fun! It was like learning to break dance but harder. I love it when Sri Lankan people teach me stuff- the language, dance moves and also how to drive a tuk tuk! With the boys we played games and did lots of drawings to make their unit more colourful and welcoming. I'm going to miss the boys a lot ...

... actually something in it for the girls! ;) Hurrah. Half way through the film there was an intermission, which was really strange! Everyone got up, moved about a bit, then came back ten minutes later and settled down a bit. It felt old fashioned but nice! From Colombo we took a very crammed train (where we were very much a spectacle it seemed) 2 hours along the coast to Galle - a very pretty colonial walled fort town. Pretty much the jewel ...
