... had been created to help avoid flooding. As a result of all the canals, the water flow to the Everglades had been significantly diminished. A project is underway to eliminate some of the drainage canals and re-route the water back to the natural flow. Part of the project is to elevate the Tamiami Trail so that the water can flow under it and into the Everglades. And that's why it takes so long to get across southern Florida these days.
