... at the end and actually found some items we wanted, so went to queue up,, only to bump into a real life, ex-convict, who was doing a book signing. This really made it all seem real. It would be days later, sat on the roof of our Hollywood hotel, when it dawned on me that we should have actually bought his book and had it signed......how did we miss that one! So we are halfway through San Francisco and I have to say it has truly met my expectations and in a lot of ways surpassed them. It's one of those places I really wanted to see in the USA but people's opinions varied when I said we were coming here. Some loved it, saying it was the most liveable USA city and some said it was downright scary with way too many homeless people that ruined the good feeling of being a visitor here. I say I love it! ... Alcatraz (thanks, Hannah!), which was fantastic. We were shown a little bit around the island, and took an eerie audio tour around the old cell house, hospital and surrounding areas. Zoe and I got locked in a solitary confinement cell – it was so dark you couldn’t see your own hand in front of your face – and apparently some inmates spent up to 19 days in there!!
