... been a good way to finish the first phase of our trip. We timed it well for the Oakland ferry and had a happy hour glass of wine to celebrate. The crossing was a great way to get a sense of the Bay Area with beautiful views all around. Our first day in San Francisco today, and straight on a tour to Alcatraz. The bay was really foggy so unfortunately we couldn't see the Golden Gate Bridge during either ferry ride, but was still nice. Alcatraz was interesting, going through the whole history of military fort, military prison, federal prison and the political involvement with the American Indian occupancy. ... a military fort, then military prison then finally the penitentiary. Alcatraz is the number 2 most popular tourist attraction in California, only second to Disneyland.

On to Fisherman's Wharf for lunch and some clam chowder followed by a great taxi ride around town to see some great sights. We drove down the street that was used for the car chase in the movie 'Bullet" with Steve McQueen. Wow ...

... 39. So we did. We had lunch at the Wipe-out bar and grill. Marie had fish and chips and I, having eaten curry not long ago, had an appetizer of coconut shrimp skewers. It was great. Then we caught the bus back to the tour office and walked (uphill) back to the hotel.
