All the time we were there they were playing a commentary listing the names and ages of the dead of 62,000 Australian soldiers who died during the First World War. The room dedicated to the unknown soldier is fascinating also. It is lined with thousands of mosaics and has a very ornate domed ceiling. ... that we've nearly reached the end of the bike tour. It will unfortunately also signal the end of the fun local questions at coke stops. After hearing that we started in Indonesia and rode the Outback, they usually follow with 'so is this supposed to be like... a holiday... for you?!' Following our rest day in Apollo Bay, we had a short 2-day run into Melbourne. The first stop was Torquay after 92km of the finest cycling along the Great Ocean Road. ... on and checked into the hotel around 3.00 pm! Happy hour came early. We deserved it after a three day drive. We could have done it in one but probably wouldn't have lived to tell the tale.

There was Kangaroo on the menu tonight but neither of us could bring ourselves to order it. Instead I serenaded Paula with my three part harmony version of Down by the Old Mill Stream. Tomorrow we take on the Capital city. No driving, we are taking the bus.

... also get connected at the 24-hour McDonald’s. We visit the mall and find that it closes at 6:00pm. Only in Australia (and perhaps New Zealand), could a mall ever close at 6:00pm! We go anyway and are lucky to find that one section which contains Woolworths, Aldi and Coles supermarkets stays open until midnight.

“Sorry” we are advised by a local “The mall’s internet is down, and will only be fixed on Monday,” ...
