    ... we were served an early dinner. Our meals at this ryokan would be served to us in our room. Our waiter, it later transpired, was actually from Germany, but his parentage was Japanese, so he was here to improve his Japanese and English on a work placement. He seemed pleased to have European guests to chat to and for our part, it was really good to have someone we could ask lots of questions about the food.
