As part of the harbours defences it had a cannon mounted on top and in one battle a cannon ball that was fired at it has become lodged in the stone wall, not far from the top and almost directly above the entrance door. Back to Waterville and a quick stroll along the esplanade before heading to Smugglers Inn, of course within half hour of getting back the clouds start to break up and out pops the sun.         Had a bit of a sleep in today as to avoid the tourist bus hordes at breakfast. Left Bunratty with a quick stop into Limerick to see King John's castle and the town centre. Drove on to Adare, which is known as one of Ireland's prettiest villages.         ... and taking pictures we soon found the delights of playing Irish links courses. Waterville GC is situated on a peninsular surrounded by the Atlantic on one side and an inlet on the other.
