    ... was getting to us, so we kicked back in a park and watched old guys play giant chess (note: Bern has giant chess sets every five feet. If you need an old guy, this is where you find them). We had a late (and once again forgettable and extortionate) dinner, then took a late night walk through Old Town back to our hotel. Tomorrow we're taking a train one hour north to Lucerne, one of the prettiest lakeside towns in Switzerland.

    We have really enjoyed our five days in Germany. There were a couple of things that really surprised us. One was the number of motorbikes of various types that we saw used. Perhaps this was just because we were in the Black Forest and the roads encouraged holidaymakers and the long week-end drivers.     ... We are getting a full downpour of snow flakes. Big, wet, fluffy ones. By the time we got back and on the train, Frank the driver let me sit up front (hee hee hee) and tells me that they have gotten 50 cm (approx. 18") of snow since we left this morning. Wow!!!     ... Old water fountains with works of art line the streets. Then there are the clock towers with massive clocks and bells in them. Figures of people have been erected at some of the bells to show the bell ringing was done in the past.

    Unlike last winter when I was here and all the shops were closed today was the complete opposite. Wonderful shops lined the streets and many coffee shops had outside seating.

    ... fresh snow. The photos and films doesn’t give it justice. We passed through a lot of tunnels and the last tunnel which was the biggest was hand dug by Italians starting in 1896 and was opened in 1912.
