New Town Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, 25-222-3265
Brekky was at 7am again today (these early mornings are tough!) and we were all ready by 8am to check out our wheels that were waiting for us at the front of the hotel. Yep - we were going to rides bikes around the ancient city of Anuradhapura..! My bike was something from the 70's - big wide seat & no suspension but it did a great job.. Our first task was to tackle the road along with all the motorbikes, cars, trucks and buses.! After a successful negotiation we arrived at the ruins and ...
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka chooklottoVesak Poya Vesak Poya is the most important of the Poya days because it commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. It is a 2 day holiday but because it was tagged on to the weekend, we had the 4 days off together so we hit the Ancient Cities. Over the Vesak period there are paper and bamboo lanterns and fairy lights hung up everywhere and it is really pretty. Poya days are also "dry" days and it is generally not possible to buy alcohol, although some of the touristy guesthouse...
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka salcat... its still pull out first look later with cars weaving around pedestrians; buses are still driven by nutters here too.
Liz is finding food OK - all breakfasts seem to have mounds of toast & in town etc you can get western/chinese. Th king Coconut stop is a god standby as is the buffalo curd with honey.
So highly successful & recommended (you can look some of stuff up on the internet).
We will be traveling independently from Kandy onwards so watch this space.
... the correct bus so I got on anyway. I don’t really understand why the guy told me - Strange!
The journey was very long for such a short distance. It took 4 ½ hours for 120kms. We were stopping everywhere but it was actually really nice to see all the Sri Lankan’s rural areas. At one stage I saw a white guy smoking a huge spill on the side of the road which I thought was quite funny.
We stopped at a station to pick up some more people and I am not ...
... directions not in the right place etc). I first visited the Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds) which are tow different length, but same width big bathing tanks, probably used by monks from the nearby Abhayagiri monastery. Then I moved on finding the Samadhi Buddha statue, one of the best in SL, along with a reclining Buddha. Afterwards I found the huge Abhayagiri Dagoba (a Buddhist monument represented by a solid hemisphere containing Buddhist relics – like a ...
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka lyncravenI cant begin to tell you how hot and sweaty i am, even my head is sweating! How delightful, how lady like! It is absolutely scorching in this Internet cafe and it's 7pm at night! It has been scorching all day and i long to dive into a pool or the sea. Thank goodness we are returning to the coast tomorrow! We are in Anuradhapura, the last remaining ancient city to visit and i think we've exhausted our self seeing all the sights. Tonight though i thought ...
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka limi07I met the girls for breakfast at 7.15am where we sat down to a fresh omlette and some vegemite on toast. Bags packed we were on our way to Anuradhapura via Chilaw and Puttalam. We have a mini-van taking us as we are heading into a not entirely friendly area - there has been some recent bus bombings by the Tamils.. We stopped first at a coconut farm to see how they source toddy - a disgusting drink.! (Fermented coconut toddy becomes alcoholic) We had the ...
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka chooklottoInto each life a little rain must fall -- Ive been catching up on my quota the last couple of days. There is a reason why the centre of Sri Lanka is as verdant as it is after all! And its certainly that. Hugely fertile. The botanical gardens at Perediniya are supposed to be the premier gardens in all of asia and very impressive they are too -- with avenues of palms, creepers, and caretakers all too too happy to show you "cocaine tree" and "scorpion" Sadly I didnt ...
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka fatboyronFor well over a thousand years, the history of Sri Lanka was essentially the history of Anuradhapura. Situated almost at the very centre of the island's northern plains, the city rose to prominence very early in the development of Sri Lanka, and maintained its pre-eminent position for over a millenium until being finally laid to waste by Indian invaders in 993 AD. At its height, Anuradhapura was one of the greatest cities of its age ...
Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka jamieparkinsSo after lunch at "a nice restaurant with no flies", according to Bandula, we continued the drive north the Anuradhapura, the site of the most extensive ruins in Sri Lanka, and the closest I'll get to Tamil Tiger territory. After finding my lodging, I'd wanted to go out, but the skies opened and that was pretty much out of the question. It actually made for a wicked sunset, because half of the sky was clearing and bright orange, and ...
