... was very pretty, with bays of golden sand and turquoise sea. Walking on the sand was quite tricky; Zoe grabbed a handful to find it looked like tiny polystyrene balls, with each grain perfectly spherical. We’re still not sure why! The area seemed a little quiet as all the locals were celebrating Eid, like Christmas day perhaps, but with more toddlers brandishing fireworks(!); so quiet in fact that on our first night we watched fellow tourists and ...

Off to Senaru we go

A travel blog entry by niomioconnor on May 29, 2014

After a nice sleep in the big comfy bed in our amazing hotel we had a relaxed breakfast and then spent the morning chilling by the pool. Leaving our tour of South East Asia behind, we took a boat over from Bali to Gili Trawangan; one of 3 small islands called the "Gilis": Gili Meno and Gili Air are the other two. These really are paradise islands. These are so small and secluded - it took us only two hours to walk around the entire island. We stayed in basic accommodation containing a bed, fan and compulsory mosquitoes, and the toilet, sink and shower were all outside. ...

... drove to the pottery craft village which was about half an hour away. To get to the village itself, we left the bus and rode in little pony carts over a bumpy road! This is very primitive pottery making for sure, but the end results were quite nice. They harvest local clay, dry it and reconstitute it. They do hand building on small turntables and then burnish the pieces with a smooth stone. After letting them dry 3 days in the shade, they are fired in ...
