Abtal El Tharir St Aswan, Nile River Valley, Egypt, 81111
Arrived to Aswan this morning. Took a personal tour on a small boat up the Nile, which was some of the best scenery I have scene yet. I am surprised by how green Egypt is, especially here in Aswan. Being right on the Nile there is a lot of plantations and palm trees, but within a mile of the river almost everything turns to sand/rock. Seeing the Egyptian boat driver stearing the motor in the back reminded me of Easy and similar trips in Wilmington. I doubt you would make a lot, but Easy, you ...
Aswan, Nile River Valley, Egypt brianburkhardtYasses(Greek) everyone, "My hometown, Aswan is lovely," our horse and carriage driver in Luxor reminisced. His perspective on the city met my eye upon arrival at the Nile hotel. The Nile River glistened as the sun speckled on the ripples of the body of water that is the essence of Egypt. "Without the Nile there would be no Egypt," our tour guides stated matter of factly. Their account of Egypt's population was that there are seventy-seven million people who live in three to five percent of th...
Aswan, Nile River Valley, Egypt cucumberqueen Hello everyone!
I have been trying unsuccessfully for days to find a computer with internet fast enough to load the editing tool necessary to post an entry on this thing.
So i guess you all want an update on what's happening with me and my ultra glamorous jet setting lifestyle. I'm in Egypt and have been since the 20th of September-you do the math because i have no idea what day it is.
First day was, predictably, a bit of a nightmare. Cairo airport is a **** hole. Baggag...
Day 3 - Early morning we were up and ready for breakfast (no fish this time) some bread and jam, just after brekky we pulled into Aswan. So we grabbed our stuff and slothed off the train and headed toward the "taxi" to dump our stuff at the hotel. The taxi was an old old Peugeot with a rack on top for bags we had about 7ppl in the cars and they have a really really thick fur dash cover which is amazing considering it is around 40 odd degrees.
Anyway we arrived at our hotel dump the ge...
This is definitely our last day in Egypt after arriving here by police-escorted convoy three days ago. Aswan is rather laid-back in comparison to Cairo and Luxor, and more black-african due to the Nubian influence. Our hotel was booked out (quite normal here) and we had to find another one, the best so far and for a long time to come, because it will be camping from now on, which we much prefer to primitive and dirty hotels. From Aswan one can go a day excursoions to Abu Simbel, the giant Monu...
Aswan, Nile River Valley, Egypt hans-jennyWe picked up some healthy train travel supplies like that crack and pop candy that you eat with a lollypop shaped like a foot and then the candy makes crackling noises when it hits your tongue, a wheel of that cheese wheel with the cow on it that all Egyptians eat for breakfast, a chunky size Kit Kat, some fake Nutella and some Boreos (Oreo biscuit rip offs). A young guy from our hotel came in a taxi with us to the train station in case something happened to us and in case we missed our train...
Aswan, Nile River Valley, Egypt inoursuitcaseThis morning gave us the option to go hot air ballooning over The Nile and up over the Valley of the Kings and Queens. It wasn't something we had planned on doing however for £40 Goose was in. This would be the cheapest opportunity to do it and what a setting to have your first balloon ride. Pick up for the balloon ride was 5.30am for those doing it whilst the remainder of the crew got a sleep in... lucky them. After a dreary eyed ride to the West Bank we met our captain, had a short safety b...
Aswan, Nile River Valley, Egypt longwaydown Was supposed to leave Cairo at 2020 last night on the seater train to Aswan, but the trains also run on Egyptian time so the 6 of us who were taking the seater train eventually left about 2130 for a supposed 13hr trip to Aswan.
Had an average sleep overnight but found that by 9am when we were supposed to arrive we had not yet reached Luxor, so our 13hr trip ended up being closer to 15 and we didn't reach Aswan until 1pm.
Because of that we changed our plans and went to Philae Te...
Slept little on the overnight train, but uit was more than made up for by the amazing sunset (cue more sunset photos!) over the Nile. Visited the temple at Philae (amazing place despite the pricey boat ride over, curse my poor bargaining skills lol), Aswan High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk.
We left Aswan and headed north on the Nile by felluca, this was great just bimbling down the Nile on a boat (which are REALLY tough to steer!) and had a fire-lit sing-a-long with some local Nubian...
... although this is nothing like the disorderly hen's seen staggering around Brighton every weekend. It is apparently tradition for the hen to be painted in intricate henna designs the night before the wedding and I have to presume this is where our term hens night comes from. Belly dancing amongst themselves ,we are attracting a lot of attention however we are made to feel very welcome and given bottles of Sprite (we'd previously avoided drinking these re ...
