Reasonable hotel - probably only just a four star. Rooms a little bit tired, and all seem to be smoking rooms so the smell when you first come in isn't at all pleasant. Nice big beds and fantastic water pressure in the showers. Nice touch is the condom provided in the bathroom! Breakfast is quite good and they also offer free wifi - and the speed is pretty good. Two metro stops to the Pearl Markets - or a reasonable walk.

Keenan, mom, and dad took Ally and I to the airport Sunday morning to see us off. Our very long (11.5 hour) flight was fairly uneventful until the last 20 minutes, which were the worst 20 minutes of my life. Ally had her barf bag out but fortunately for me never actually used it. The rest of the flight we spent reading, synchronizing iPods, …

      Tiananmen Square

Day 2: I got up early and headed to Tiananmen Square, which has huge mausoleum to Chairman Mao and the long queues to see his mummified body. At the end of Tiananmen Square lies the Gate of Heavenly Peace and portrait of Mao hangs above the main entrance. The gate marks the beginning of the …

To experience snow is the main reason why we visited Beijing (well, at least other than visiting a friend there). Growing up in tropical country, snow is felt super magical, and we are so excited to experience that for the first time. Reality checks in, and we realize that there will be no snow this year (at least during the time of our visit). A …

Day 3: I had a good breakfast at Novotel Hotel and I set off for Summer Palace using the subway line to station Xiyuan, I walked 10 minutes north wards to reach the west gate of Summer Palace. The Area surrounding the Summer Palace is very vast, scenic as it was Imperial family's summer retreat, I walked around the ancient pavilions …
