Today was our
longest driving day and we were on a lot of very narrow windy roads again. We
left Cilaos and drove continually downhill along the road we had freaked out
coming up 2 days before. It didn’t seem near as scary this time and also we
seemed to have the chance to observe the fantastic scenery. Back in St Louis,
which was a lot more busier than when we last went through we travelled south
to the unfortunately named town of Le Tampon before ...
... but was built up until we got to the top where there were very lush dairy farms and little villages not unlike parts of Europe. We continued to climb on an even narrower and windier road before stopping at a lookout over a deep narrow gorge which had been made by the volcano millions of years ago. the interior today we saw stunning scenery but the most scary roads we have
ever been on. This was well and truly accentuated by driving on the right hand
side of the road. Our first hair raising experience was the road from St Gilles
to the mountainous lookout of Maidon. We were lucky to make the lookout not 10
