      Escaping Nairobi

This morning we slept in as long as we could in order to be ready for a 9:45 departure from the hotel. It was a cool morning, Marjolaine needed a sweater and I almost did as we ate our breakfast on the tiny pool terrace.

Daniel was ready to go right on time. We drove on the Ngong Road in to Nairobi, then turned right to head out to the airport. Because traffic was heading into the city we had a quick trip out to the airport. This is never something to ...

      Last day and african observations

... heaps of time to spare.

We flew in a tiny plane back to Mauritius so having heaps of time to kill in transit at Mauritius we thought for our last blog entry we would write up some African observations.

      • The further south we travelled the wealthier the countries seem to be eg. The supermarkets in the North have a very limited variety and stock especially fresh produce. The roads can virtually impassable in the North, especially in the wet, without ...

      The volcano and hell (bourg)

A travel blog entry by daveanddale on Apr 29, 2014

... in the main street was
very crowded but we managed to get the last available table. We struggled even
more with this French menu as the waiter had no English at all. The creole meal
of vanilla chicken and a sausage ragout was different but tasted ok. At the end
of the meal when we asked for the bill the waiter served us this spirit which
he got out of a large container. We had no idea what it was but it burnt going
down because of its obvious high alcohol content.

... three hours. The ship went the short distance overnight to Le Port on the north west coast of the island of Reunion. Reunion is a part of France, not just a overseas protectorate like Noumea or Tahiti, but an actual prefecture of France. It is a circular Island with a diameter of about 80 km with mountains rising almost straight out of the sea up to nearly 10000ft, higher than it is volcanic in origin and still has an active volcano which last erupted in 2012. Because the ship ...

      Walking amongst the cirques

... a lot of home except
the surrounding peaks were much higher and steeper. The river and waterfall at
the bottom of the walk was very refreshing and we spent a fair amount of time
soaking our feet in the cold water. We decided to have some more yummy buns
from the bakery and shopped for food for tomorrow’s breakie and lunch that we
would be having on the road.
