Today is my last day as a registered doctor in Australia. Tomorrow I retire officially. Mixed feelings, obviously but the right decision, definitely. Drove on to Lourdes. This was where the Virgin Mary appeared to St Bernadette 16 or 18 times in 1858. We were pleasantly surprised to find the religious site not crowded and no trouble to look at everything, as all the basilicas and the Grotto etc were in a Sanctuary that was free ...

... and glorious sandy surf beaches. Drove through Guernica, site of severe bombing in the Spanish Civil War in April 1937, with huge civilian casualties, and inspiration for Picasso's anti-war painting "Guernica." Looked for the Gernikako Arbola, a tree representing the soul of the Basque Country, but could not find it (or anywhere to park to go and look). Drove on to Lekeitio for shopping, and to Ondarroa, where we overlooked cliffs and ...

Praying and singing. Our hotel was old but had character and fantastic view of the river and the town. When you go for a walk there are tons of shops selling little Catholic souvenirs such as statues of Mary, crus affixes and lots of little bottles so you can take the grotto water ...

... don't think about it was the best thing to do . . . many have obviously travelled on it in safety over the years. Views were great but it wasn't the summit - that required walking another two kms up a rough, winding, steep track . . . I've come a long way and not likely to travel this way again so . . . why not? Great idea . . . the cross country trainers bounded past me like springboks but I kept going and so glad I did - the view of ...

... There are over 250 hotels . . . all with religious names as well. The hotel, whilst nothing grand, looks a little fancier than previous accommodation - it has air conditioning and a bar fridge.

Lourdes is situated on the Gave River at the foot of the Pyrenees. It was here that a young fourteen year old Bernadette Soubirous saw the first of eighteen apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Bernadette left Lourdes in 1866, entering ...
