... 17 lots of explosives in underground tunnels to try to create confusion amongst the Germans as they advanced. This crater is ENORMOUS. The photos do not do it justice. While we were there, there were 2 volunteers, a lady and a man, screwing small brass plaques into the wooden walkway circling the crater. Each plaque had been ordered by a relative who wanted someone remembered. Not necessarily someone who had died in the war, but people who had fought for those years and ...

... as the finest single feat of the war. The achievement surprised Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig, amazed the German commanding Peronne, delighted the press and elated Lieutenant General Sir John Monash according to Australian historian, Bill Gammage. The memorial is located on Avenue Des Australiens. This is the second memorial with the first being destroyed by the Germans who were very unhappy with the original depicting a digger piercing an eagle.

Must say yesterday was a cool day for me.  Was pretty tuckered when I got back....but the lounge called me.  Kinda weird seems all the hotels here are saving money on bar staff...whoever works the night desk...also works the you have to find him when you want a drink.  So I found the dude and had a few drinks before hitting the hay.   Had no idea where I was going the next day when I woke up.  Beautiful day...the birds were chirping n all that .... felt bad I had to ...

Well it was a pretty non eventful day. The train was the same as all the other. Arriving in Lille after only an hours ride, I found my way to the hostel, only a short walk from the train station.
