... offer. All I had to do was walk up to the counter and say "Petra Moon Travel" and I would get the deal. Sketchy, but cheap. I decided I'd go for it.

As we ascended in the Jordanian mountains (there are mountains in Jordan?), the terrain become more rocky and less sandy. Finally, we came to a clearing with a view that made my jaw sink to the floor of the car. As the cab driver pointed out into the distance, he kind of ...

Madaba, Jordan netsrotj... enough, and for 11 dinar the price was not bad either.

After dinner we headed back to the hotel, some of the group wanted to have a party, but the plans kind of fell through. I stopped at a grocery store and found a mountain dew, which was almost unheard of in these countries, so I had to get one. Oddly, that and a large water were only 85 piastres [equivalent to the US cents, 100 per dinar]. On the way back we stopped at a dessert ...

Hebron, West Bank and Gaza brisko... on the bus back to sleep and next thing we know we are arriving in Madaba. Madaba is a satellite town of Amman, quite clean, hardly any tourists and a lovely hotel to boot. We grabbed our rooms, dumped our stuff and then walked over to St. George's Orthodox church in the middle of town. This church has some amazing Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics but it has something that now other church, mosque or synagogue has in this part of the world. A very special ...
Madaba, Jordan dkjohansenDISCLAIMER: I do not recommend this combination. It almost did us in.
The alarm went off for the second day in a row at 4:15 AM. The previous morning, we had meant to go to Masada for a sunrise hike, but couldn't drag ourselves out of bed. This time, it was our last morning in the Dead Sea area, so it was now or never. I stumbled into hiking gear and sleepwalked to the car. Rich, a lifesaver, had packed my favorite pop-tarts in Seattle and brought ...
Sedom, HaDarom, Israel hkcigar... The city built up on this cliff was fascinating, and there is an outstanding view of the Red Sea and surrounding valley. After Masada, we went back up the Dead Sea shore to Qumran, where they discovered the Dead Sea scrolls. We learned about the men of the Jewish sect "the Essenes" who lived there, and spent a lot of time copying scripture. They then hid the scripture in clay vessels. Of course, it's so dry there that ...
Jerusalem, Israel semitte... with the wind blowing through the Siq. Very goosebumpy and other worldly. Hot tea is then bought round and one of the guides tells a tale which was difficult to hear as about half the audience got up to leave making a dreadful noise. None of this is amplified. We sat on our mats until most had left ans walked slowly back to the gate and into the noisy sounds of the town which felt quite a shock after the previous two hours. We left Petra at 08.00 in the morning to travel here ...
Madaba, Jordan frankieg... the trip. We then drove along the mountain range we were on and way down into a valley. We couldn't believe how high we are. Through the valley we see lots of very large Bedouin tents and small farms. The creek through the valley is flowing with water from the rain and snow overnight. We now climb out of the valley and up another hill that is higher that the one we were on. We can see the plateau across the valley of the other hill! It is beautiful ...
