Stage 1 - KL, Malaysia

Day 1-2 (14-15 June 05) Well, it was a non-eventful journey from London to KL via Dubai, full on both flights but luckily no screaming kids nearby. Arrived in KL with a relatively mild temp of only 32 degrees. It was then onto a 2 hr xfer by bus into the city from the airport, so by the time I'd arrived at my hotel, I'd been travelling for most of a day and felt like a limp cabbage. 1st impressions of the Royale Bintang Hotel was that it has a nice modern decor, situated within the popular Go...

Ciao Cambodia

HALLO nothing special happened today I spend most of it traveling from Siem Reap to KL with a stop over in Phnom Penh. In the evening I arrived here in KL it is nice and warm 31 degrees and sunny. I manged to give my bike to Malaysia Airways Cargo and it should be on a plane back to London tomorrow and so hopefully it will arrive before me. I am staying a fairly nice and posh hotel and had a nice dinner in an Indian restaurant it is much cheaper here then in Siem Reap in Cambodia. Good night ...

Last Day in KL

Hallo This was my last day here in KL so I got up at 6.30 and after breakfast I went to the Petronas Towers and joined the queue for the lift to up to the sky-bridge. After 1,5 hours I got a ticket and lucky one for immediately access, people behind me had to wait for more then one hour. We watch a film about the company Petronas and then we took the lift up to the 41st-floor 170m above ground the sky-bridge nice view and after 10 min we had to go down again. After that I went back to Bukit B...

Sleeping on the Monorail and eating Mac and Cheese

I arrived at Kuala Lumphur, stupidly early in the morning, due to the fact that our train driver was being chased by the hounds of hell, and as a result had moved at a speed Superman would have been proud of. We arrived an hour earlier than timetabled, which was not fun at all. After picking up the tickets for the next bit of the trip, Dad and I headed to our Hotel, a place called the Royale Bintang, which turned out to be lovely. However, we weren't allowed to check in until 11AM which gave ...

Kuala Lumpur (with no Mumbai stopover!)

We flew through the night from Dubai to Kuala Lumpur and were suposed to have a tarmac stopover in Mumbai, India (as we did on the way over). As the inflight map got to above Mumbai we were still at 30,000 ft so we realised there wasn't going to be a stopover. It wasn't until we were in our hotel room in KL and put the news on, that we realised there was a very good reason not to land in Mumbai. It was the night that extremist gunmen took control of several buildings including the Taj Palace ...

Kuala Lumpur - a quick visit

We flew Emirates to Kuala Lumpur via Dubai and arrived late evening on the 13th at the Royal Bintang Hotel in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle. Things didn't start well as we found ourselves unable to get into the room because the latch had been put down from inside by the cleaners who had obviously left via the adjoining room. Eventually the hotel handyman arrived and managed to unscrew the latch and let us in - not a good start, especially when you have been travelling all day an...

Air Asia X from Stanstead to KL

We had a very early start to walk from the hotel to Lambeth North tube station in time for the first train at 5:39am. We had realised that Lambeth North was much nearer than Waterloo to the hotel, even though the hotel was called Days Inn Waterloo. We had a good connection to go across to Liverpool Street to get the Stanstead Express. Getting a refund on our Oyster Cards took ages - the attendant had to write out masses of figures before givibg us back the money. As a result we missed the 6:1...

Some sleep to prepare for shopping...

Our day started with arriving in KL and getting to the airport as described in yesterday's post. With the 7-hour time difference, we had lost part of a day. After breakfast in the hotel we went up to our room for a few hour's sleep. The room had a pull-out clothes line above the bath, so we hand-washed a few clothes. Much cheaper then the hotel laundry service!

Walking around the corner, we bought a stored-value card for the KL Monorail which runs from around the corner and went across...

Another day in shopper's paradise

We had thought of catching a bus down to Melaka today but slept in until 10:15 - which meant we had a mad rush to get downstairs before breakfast finished at 10:30! Fortunately they hadn't cleared away much so we were able to have most of what we would have liked. However, by the time we had finished eating then gone back upstairs to shower, we decided it was too late for the outing to be worthwhile.

An overall good experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked three rooms but out of which, only one was available when we checked in. Although we were tired but we figured that the rooms were not ready yet since it was the peak period.

Stayed for 4 days and overall, the service was good. Rooms were definitely clean and no smell of any sort. Shower facility was good and bed was comfortable. Room was made promptly every morning.

Breakfast consisted of Malay, Western and Chinese food which was a good mix. However, the service could be a little poor when the crowd is huge. Food is not changed, therefore you can expect the same breakfast for all the days.

Need to improve on service

from A TripAdvisor Member
The front desk system was down when we checked in and the checking in was done manually. It was a bit disorganised and people were jumping queues. We were not given the non smoking room that we reserved because the staff told us it was already all taken up and we were allocated to a smoking room but when we went up to the room, it was already occupied. It took us an hour plus to get another room. The hotel room is very nice and clean but the flush and the shower is not working properly. The breakfast is good if you are not the very fussy type. Some staffs are polite and friendly but some are not. Overall the hotel is good if you are not very particular about the service. Location is very good!

Average hotel

from SGReef
Average hotel with average service. Service during breakfast was rather poor. Staff did not set up the table despite having guest sitting around. Service at the main reception was also rather slow.

However, quite good location for the price and also clean rooms. Abt 15mins away from the bus station and main shopping area.

The Service Is Totally Disappointing

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was brought to a table that was unclean and was left with used cutlery for my breakfast. And when I asked to talk to the Senior Supervisor on duty, he just ignore us and instead approached the caucasion guest next to my table. I have to wait for bout ten minutes and call out for him before he comes over to me but he doesn't seems to happy or willing to listen to my complain. I personally don't like it when I was given excuses rather then apologise after all these had happen. And this makes me even unsatisfied with the service that they provide.

After this incident, I went to check out at the front desk and there was another unfriendly staff. I remember that all the staffs were having a smiley badge that says they serve with a smile but i see no smiles at all. And when I was talking to the staff, he just ignore and walk away after he checked something on the computer system.

I'm sure that this is not the kind of attitude a service provider should have. All in all, this is just my most disappointing experience I had in a hotel.

Nice hotel

from kathymmmm
Very nice clean hotel, huge bed and room, good location - along the same road as a large number of huge shopping centres. Staff polite. No problems, would stay there again.

Great Value!

from odd78
Knowing I paid only $34 USD (at that time) per night. I did not expect much; my expectations were not high!

When I arrived in my room I was shocked. It was a huge room, very clean, decorated well, huge bed, large window and pleasant bathroom! I couldn't believe that I got a room like this for so little. The staff was friendly also. Located extremely close to the main shopping area.

I really cannot complain about it. The Royale Bintang Hotel is simply a great value.

Fabulous hotel!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
It is always a gamble booking accommodation on-line so we were absolutely elated when we arrived after a long flight from Amsterdam to find a gorgeous, immaculately clean and comfortably cool hotel foyer. The check in went smoothly despite the fact we had booked through another company and not the hotel directly. The room was beautifully renovated and comfortable with plenty of room to set up our travel cot for our two year old son. The bed was huge and quite simply the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on!! The bathroom was luxurious with a shower over the bath and fantastic water pressure. We ordered room service the first night we arrived and the food was delicious, the portions generous and the prices very reasonable. The breakfast buffet (included in our room rate) was extensive and delicious ranging from toast with jam to full Asian curries and noodles to hash browns with sausages and baked beans. The breakfast was also available until 10 am which is great when you're on holiday. The pool area was clean and inviting and a great respite after a long day in the KL heat. The staff were generally great but the porters especially were fantastic!! Friendly and really helpful with all enquiries about KL. They advised us on the correct taxi fares to pay and where to go and what to see and also provided maps. We were so impressed with the Royale Bintang we booked on-line and stayed there again on our way back home!! We would definitely recommend the Royale Bintang to anyone staying in KL and will be visiting again next time we are in Malaysia!!

PS Booking through an independent on-line company will ensure you get the best rates!! When we originally went to book our extra nights at the hotel reception the gentleman told us we would be best to book again through the internet as the hotel itself couldn't offer us such a good deal.

Robbery in the hotel

from ioutkine
My family and I stayed in Royale Bintang hotel on 15-17 April 2005. It was early morning and we were sleeping in our room when my wife was awoken by some noise. She saw a man walking in our room. She was very scared and she screamed. Man run away. I got up and checked my wallet - all money was stolen. I called reception desk to report the crime and asked them to do all appropriate steps. Security guy came and gave me a paper to fill instead of trying to catch robber or to investigate. No more steps was undertaken by hotel personnel. 3 hours later I called police by myself because staff did nothing. Duty manager was impolite. No explanations, no apologize. It was like a shock. You are not safe when sleeping in your room!

Excellent location!

from nadalert
I stayed here in the first week of October 2004. It is a lovely hotel with extremely friendly staff. Compared with other hotels in this area it is not the best but still excellent for the price (about $50 per night). It is very centrally located in the golden triangle where all the shopping malls are. The rooms are of a reasonable size and there is also a nice swimming pool and gym. All in all i would stay in this hotel again!
