    I'm so silly as I thought mum flew in on the 10th of May but she didn’t, she arrived on the 12th. This meant I arrived in Shanghai a couple of days early but not to worry as I then had a couple of days to find my feet in a new country. Mum arrived late on the 12th and I was there waiting for her at the airport, much to her relief and shear joy. We caught the metro into the city and made our way to Etour Mingtown Youth Hostel.     ... at least two abandoned broken toilets that have been dumped in flower beds, ugly concrete patches in sidewalks made of otherwise quite decent granite settes, and countless little broken or decaying things.

    It's not all bad, the area is clearly a financial success, Jon's office building is quite nice, set in a very pleasant park, and the streets and businesses are full and lively, and some of the buildings are quite fabulous looking.

    ... out to Pearl Street market, which is one of the best places to get cheap things. We had fun trying things on and bargaining with the store attendants. I didn't buy any clothes, because I want to try to buy a lot of stuff on the street in Beijing where things are really cheap, so I'm saving my clothes budget. We did find a DVD store across the street. Because of the censorship laws here, all the stores have secret rooms, that the doors literally are hidden ...
