    Not Great, Not Bad

    Standard soulless city hotel
    Modest room
    Staff quite friendly and helpful
Location is not city centre, but there is a complimentary shuttle into the city, but no return - they want everyone to use a specific taxi service, for reasons one can only wonder at! But it is not far to walk, 20 minutes,, and people are willing to help with directions.

... it has been over 30 years for Helen and about 10 years for Louise, so things could have changed. We locate Beethoven Strasse. Find the house number. Hmm. Its an apartment block with graffiti on it. Not at all what the aunties remembered. Helen jumps out of the van (and it has to be said here that we are travelling in a white van with really dark tinted windows - there are lots of similar vans in Europe - and they can't all be those vans we warn our children about ...

At last we got the chance to spend more than a couple of days in Maastricht! My cousin Annelies and her husband Jules live there and it's a wonderful city full of history and culture. We really enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts and Jen and Matt were able to visit for my birthday. Sharan and Peter Burrow were only an hour away in Brussels so we got to spend a weekend with them as well as cousins Kees and Ans who live in the rural town of Berlicum and Sanne and Dan in Zierikzee ...

... Netherlands fashion, it started to rain. It was interesting walking around the town, but once again most shops were closed, today being Sunday. At least it is saving us money, no shops open, also no time to shop. Maastricht looks to be quite a wealthy town judging by the prices of things in the shops.

    ... around here.

We made our way around Brussels and on into Limburg, near the river Maas and the borders with Holland and Germany. We stopped at a nice ACSI site costing only 12e. We were both feeling under the weather and very tired - so a very early night for us!
