Historical Traveler Reviews Novotel Bucarest City Centre Bucharest

      Angenehmer Aufenthalt...

      from

      from

      from

      -

      Pleasant Stay.....

      from

I have stayed multiple times at the Novotel Bucharest and have always been pleased, even though I think it is overpriced (I think I pay about 175-200 Euros / night). The hotel is fairly new so the common areas and rooms are nice. Like usual, the good, bad and ugly!

      The Good

      - Nice clean room. The room was good size, with couch and work desk.

      - The fitness center. Not real big but had enough equipment to get a nice workout. Also had a small pool that had a jet that you could swim against for a great workout (or get pushed to the back wall!)

      - Front desk help. I asked for restaurant help and they came through both times with a good Italian and Romania restaurant that were casual and within a good price range.

      The Bad

      - I live in Europe and regrettably have been forced to accept smoking places. However, I could not enjoy a drink in the lobby bar due to the clientele that I believe to all be smoking. Maybe it was a conspiracy to blow the smoke at me! Not the hotels fault, but would love to see a non-smoking area. There and everywhere!

      - Fitness center location. Here I am in my workout clothes getting off the elevator to what I expect to be a quiet area to walk to the fitness center. Well, I basically walked into the middle of a large group of people taking a break from a conference being held on the same floor. I was ok, but be warned in case your workout clothes have holes in them!

      The ugly

      - Nothing. Overall nice place to stay. Would like to see the rates come down though!

      Elegante, comodo, ma caro

      from

      Elegant, convenient -- but pricy

      from

After a sleepless night in a supposedly three-star hotel I was looking for anyplace that had a free room. Since I clearly couldn't trust the 3-stars to meet my needs, I upgraded to the Novotel and did not regret it, although it was definitely pricey. Perhaps I could have found a better price in advance on line.

The hotel is quite new, decor is elegant and modern, room was large and comfortable, bathroom had separate tub and shower, all spotless. And it was quiet. Free wifi was appreciated. The location is great -- very near many of my appointments and a short walk to the metro (which is definitely worth it, not just for cost but to avoid the terrible traffic jams). Breakfast buffet was very nice, and dinners were adequate. My only gripe is a very small one -- for that price, I expect real glasses, not plastic.

      Elégant, pratique... mais onéreux

      from

      Room for improvement

      from

I was here for 6 nights, the bedroom was very clean with tasteful furniture, lots of space and a very comfortable big bed. The bathroom was very nice with a separate shower and tub. The gym was well equipped with a good choice of machines and the steam room was a little piece. of luxury. Food was good in the restaurant at night. An ATM in the lobby which accepts most major bank cards is also a nice touch

However I would not go back to the Novotel on my next trip to Bucharest. There are other hotels in the area that offer all of that but without the problems I experienced:

      - I found that the staff were surly and a little reluctant to help My colleague and I waited over ten minutes for someone to help us with a quick question whilst the 3 members of staff on duty helped one gentleman. One one occasion they were even too helpful- I don't really expect to have to tell the same person three times that no, I don't want help with my luggage

      - Having spent quite a long time there over a weekend I would have liked to have had more choice of english speaking TV channels. A weekend of CNN and BBC World does not make much fun.

      - For such a big room, there was only a tiny wardrobe with no space to leave foldable t-shirts and sweaters

      - At check out I was asked to check if the bill (in Lei) was correct, which I could not do because all prices in the hotel with regards to phone calls and other services are presented in euros. A big chain hotel really should have this possibility

      - My worst problem with this hotel came about after I'd checked out. By asking for the bill in euros I clearly confused the check out girl who proceeded to charge me the wrong amount by more than 900 euros. Money proceeded to be taken out and paid back on to my credit card with no communication from the hotel until I called them to find out what on earth was going on. The 'desk manager' was totally unable to get my name right and clearly had a lot to learn about customer service- when I asked why she had not been in touch with me she stated that she had no contact details for me although I pointed out I gave them at check in and also when I made the reservation online. Clearly she was only able to do this once I'd suggested it (which I do not expect) as mysteriously a few minutes later I received an email...

      Un servicio fantástico...¡un café horrible!

      from

He tomado mejor café de máquinas.

      Great service... horrible coffee!

      from

We stayed at the Novotel from December 28-January 4. The hotel is very new and French-run. All staff speaks English, so we had no problems communicating with anybody. Service was excellent from the moment we stepped into the lobby, The rooms are average, with Ikea-like furniture and NO OUTLETS in the vanity area! That drove me crazy, as I had no area near a mirror in which to curl my hair with a curling iron. A hair dryer was built-in to the wall, which was helpful.

The daily breakfast buffet is excellent, with exception of the coffee, which has a strong flavor of something else which we could not pinpoint along with the coffee flavor. The servers brewed fresh cups just for us, but it was still terrible! As I said, the excellent service was lovely, and one waiter made us cappuchinos instead, but it did not improve the brew flavor. We like strong coffee, and drink it often, but this stuff was just bad! I have had bettert coffee from vending machines. But, to their credit, the staff really tried!

The Novotel is in a great area, near key plazas, including University Plaza, a center point of the city. We had the pleasure of spending New Years there, as Romania joined the EU. Bucharest was festooned with lovely lights and decorations everywhere- a gorgeous sight.

The bar, 37 is really a lovely area, and the staff is just as great. Sink into a cushy chair or chaise lounge and enjoy the yummy drinks and gorgeous decor. The Novotel seems very focused on business travelers, but we were a family group and it was fine. We paid extra for internet access in our room, and I must say it was frustrating because the service was very spotty.

I can recommend the Novotel as a nice hotel, but will ultimately return to the Intercontinental (it was sold out for New Years) as I prefer it overall. The staff of the Novotel is its greatest asset!
