It was really cold in the ice caves. It was minus 6 degrees. My hands were stinging at the end though.
Today we went to the Permafrost Institute. We saw a baby mammoth, all frozen! I stood next to a real mammoth leg bone! We caught the bus back.
Now we are going to go back to Vladivostok. I’ll be home ...
Yakutian hospitality!
... was awesome. We all had to put on silver coats and ugg boots for the trip inside. And now I found out what the temperature actually is inside the permafrost - -6 degrees.
There was the Yakutian Santa Claus in one of the caves! We all got to have our photo taken with him, a very dramatic figure, all dressed in blue and silver, with a fabulous long white beard and big hat.

Relaxing in Yakutsk
... for a walk this morning, a Laika, one year old. His name means Little Fire.
We went via taxi to an impressive cultural centre, just out of town, where the owner, Guerman, keeps and breeds Laika sledding dogs. They are so beautiful! Jon had a great time meeting all the dogs. Guerman also showed us photos of what must be the major Russian dog sled challenge – 900km around ...
Poor Jon's turn! We are back in Yakutsk
... Amanda that the Sakha culture has been undergoing a revival ever since the fall of the USSR. So it certainly seems.
And here we are back in the Hotel Sterkh. And that hot shower was just as good as expected. Jon is currently snoring, in what is actually a rather comfortable bed. Yes, in a Russian hotel, that is remarkable. We have booked in here for four nights.
