Sladami polskich zolnierzy

Dziś zawitaliśmy do Narviku - małego, paskudnego miasteczka. Większość z nas obejrzała wystawę w muzeum wojennym i odwiedziliśmy grób polskich żołnierzy na pobliskim cmentarzu (jedyny grób, na którym paliły się znicze). Wjechaliśmy tez kolejka linowa by napawać się widokiem (piękna okolica ...

To Tysfjord via the Svartisen Glacirer

... looked and felt like the worlds biggest pile of party ice. After some photos and an obligatory taste test, we headed back to the ferry, but only after Stu and Joel went for a swim in the lake below the glacier, and Stu also posed for a photo wearing only his boxers!

Our next stop was at the Arctic Circle tourist centre, in a rather barren part of the country. Not much to see there really, but I bought another patch for my collection and took some photos.

Planeleggingsfasen

By bus and train

See previous entry. Train departed Narvik 1525 arrived Lulea 2240. Spoke to two Dutch girls at train station in Narvik. Ran into them several times along the way -- on the train, in Lulea, Haparanda, Tornio. By far the most unfriendly travelers I ve run into yet. Never a nod of recognition. Almost hostility. Don t know why. Curious. Never anything like it. Almost all others I ve met at least civil, most pleasant and frindly communicative.

Norway - the hard yards

... just had too much of a high expectaion before hand. Anyway, having checked out the impressive opera house i continued my stroll down Kongens gate to the Akershus Fortress, a castle which was built under King Hakon in 1299 with a specific strategic position to defend the harbour from attack thus giving fantastic views of the Oslofjord. The views were certainly impressive but its the walk to the Fortress that i will remember the most. As i was heading down Kongens gate i could see in the ...

... a statue of giant troll. Once in Sweden, we stopped at the country's famous Ice Hotel, yes, a hotel made of ice and snow. It was partially melted but still incredible. It was like an arctic ghost town, snow plowed and packed over the entry ways. We walked along the perimeter, determined to see inside. Near the shore, we found a way in. I peered in to see a long, low hallway with dripping doorways. Ice blocks for beds and chairs. I ...

Narvik and the Ofotbanen Railway

... road. Other than a few museums, there isn't alot to do here. Be very wary about camping at Narvik camping as it is right beside the E6 (main road) and the rail way track, however you may bump into Miles Roddis (Author of the Lonely Planet for Norway) here. Also happy as i have now seen my first sunset in about two week on the 16th July shortly before midnight. Next the ferry to the scenic Lofoten Islands.

... game is a testiment to our generation´s creativity (and drinking habit)). The remainder of my time was spent on long cross-country skiing treks and nights in the sauna- trying with all our might to will the northern lights into being (to no avail). On my way back south I stopped off in Kiruna to visit the Ice Hotel-- the only thing in James Bond´s "Die Another Day" that was actually real. The hotel is truly made of snow and ice with a series ...
