Day Ten - At Sea

A travel blog entry by steve874 on Mar 14, 2015

Very rocky night last night, force 10 I think he said, lazy morning with a brew in bed and showered and in Anderson's for a read for a bit. We're skipping any breakfast today as we have our peninsular club lunch at 12 then our peninsular cocktail party before tea tonight. So it's free vin rouge all day :-) Things seem to have quite end a bit regards the weather and we have blue skies, still a bit ...

Arrived at Alta around 11:30 and we're now at 70 degrees North and our most Northerly position. Snow all over but the weather has cleared and at present we have beautiful blue skies. It turns out that we are moored right at the end of the runway for Alta ...

This morning we woke up at 8.15am, to find we were already docked in Alta, at 70 N and the most northerly point of this cruise. We are 1200 nautical miles from the North Pole. :-)

The cruise director’s voice came over the tannoy to say that the current temperature was -10C and we could expect a high of -5. Brrr! In fact, it’s never been above freezing since we crossed the Arctic Circle. ...

... the famous alta rock carvings made by man up to 6000 years ago. Norwegian tradition was to re paint the outlines of the carvings in a rust red paint (must have had a job lot as all the houses are the same colour too) At first glance the carvings look like they were drawn by the local play school but on investigation they do make sense and get better the newer they are. When we get to 4000 years old they are drawing proper looking ...
