With the far north conquered, it was time to begin our trek back south and get ready to go home. Sad face. But first one last stop - Alta, and the Alta museum, on the way to the Alta airport.

The Alta Museum is home to ancient rock carvings that are not only super cool, but also a lovely nature walk. The information brochure is very informative, you can see the carvings quite well, and you do learn a great ...

On the bus again for a 400 km trip south to Tromso. Our first stop was at the Rock Carving Museum in Alto. This is a UNESCO world heritage site. The carvings were chiselled into the Rock surfaces near the seashore before the ice ages, with the oldest carvings having been chiselled around 6,000years ago. ... interrupted by lakes of various sizes. Arrived at the hotel about 2.00pm

At 3.30 we were off to Sorrisniva, site of the world famous Igloo Hotel. It was here that we boarded traditional canoes (with outboard motor) with 8 of us in each. We travelled up the Alta river which in some sections is 25 meters deep and this is where the biggest salmon lurk.

On our return to the Igloo Hotel a hot drink and Norwegian waffles were waiting

Back to the hotel for dinner.

... the road, but from the open tops we had the most fantastic views of blue skies, blue lakes and fjords, while we drove through rain and sleet.

We soon got to the huge Altafjord, and after passing lots of roadworks got to the smaller branch of the Tafjord. This ...

Day Nine - Alta/At Sea

... full. From there we went up to the Lords for a pint and to listen to the duo in there. Then to the Pacific lounge to see Jenny Williams who had a very good voice, pop, musicals, opera a bit of everything and quite good. After that we had a nightcap in the cabin and watched the end of Captain Phillips on TV whilst the cabin moves all over the place. Ready to get rocked to sleep after our late night last night ...
