The Lake District & Beatrix Potter

A travel blog entry by kyliep on Nov 01, 2014

We woke to a cloudy day today. The main place we wanted to visit was Hill Top, which was Beatrix Potter's home when she first moved from London. She used the earnings from her first couple of books to buy the property. When she died she requested that no one live in the property and that everything be left as it was. She also wrote a list of things she wanted left on display in ...

    The Long Drive North

Not really a mountain by world standards I guess, but for England its one of those above 3000ft, which is good enough for us. Pre-booked first class on Virgin trains from Euston and a short taxi ride and I'm in Keswick for the afternoon. My room in the Queens Hotel looks directly out over to Skiddaw, ...

... of one house gave a different message.

The final memory of these few days in the Lake District was of our walk up the river Kent, in the estate of Levens Hall. The walk followed the track of a long defunct canal that ran alongside the river and whilst there was no water in the old canal, the river was quite spectacular. We stopped to look at the water crashing over a weir and then suddenly we saw a curved black shape in the foam. A ...
