Malang and off to the magnificant Mount Bromo

... Cemoro Lawang would have had stunning views of Bromo if they had built the rooms facing the right direction. We find this a lot in Indonesia, they build without thought so they build hotels next to the road with 200m of wasteland between you and the beech and the restaurant area facing the road and not the beach? Here was the best example where the backs of everyone's porch faced the other rooms and not the spectacular view of the volcanoes. We think that they get ...

      The Misleadingly Named Hotel Happy

... of a trap to get a captive market for the tour company. I've felt that before with taxis, but this time it came across a bit more sinister.

Anyway, I said before, I suck at haggling. My tactic is often to just decide how much I want to pay for something then pretend that's all the money I have. It's not the cheapest way of doing things, but I'm way too British and always back down as soon as it looks like I'm making someone else uncomfortable. This has led to ...

It took me a few days to cycle from Lake Toba via Pemantangsiantar and Medan to Bukit Lawang but the roads are crazy, really fast and furious with all sorts of obstacles and challenges along the way. I've been forced off the road several times with buses overtaking trucks on narrow roads, they give you no option but to get out of their way, dodging the potholes and other bikers! So it's been a fun start to cycling in Indonesia but on the plus side I'm always ...

... In the evening Terry went back to the room to get the cards and found a snake in the room by the door!.....it had slithered under the door and was waiting......coloured brown, red and white and looking poisonous Terry opted to get help. One of the staff pushed it out with a broom handle and said it was dangerous - how bloody scary! We spend 2 days in the jungle and never see a snake. That night we thoroughly checked our bags and tucked the mozi net in tight!

... bus and leave our bags on, and it was too much effort to take our bags off. So we were the only ones to remain in the bus and were passed out by the time we started moving again. Around 0430 we made another stop at what looked like a bus station. We knew the drive was supposed to be 12 hours and we still had another 2 or 3 to go so we didn't move. I happened to ask the man behind us though if we were in Makang, just to be sure and surprise! We were! ...
