Checking in the luggage and getting our passports checked felt like an eternity as we were constantly trying not to make any eye contact with the airport security. Meanwhile the mobile phone was ringing off the hook, threatening messages from the school with more reports of deportation and arrest, friends and managers advising us to run and get out of the ...

At 00.01 our train pulled out of the station en-route to Hohhot. Stayed in Train Carriage 15, Middle Bunks 1 & 2, enroute to Hohhot [T&J Rating: ...

... 30,000 years old! All the details of the rooms were clearly visible and we were shocked by just how ancient this site was! Nearby was a reconstructed version of the village complete with cavemen style actors. Next we managed to get a free ride in an electric car to the Ming-era section of the Great Wall. We were able to climb up onto the wall at a crumbling section and get good views it stretching into the distance - at this point we were the only tourists there! Things ...
