Ningaloo at last! After a short stop off at Carnaveron at a pretty basic site, we took the plunge and drove the last 400k to our goal. The driving is by now not painful and we arrived full of anticpation after a three hour drive across a landscape where the termite mounds rivalled the pinnacle desert and you got excited at the thought of an oncoming vehicle! The heat by now is intense and it hits you a hammer blow as we changed over every 100kms or so. Flies are a pain round here entering eve...
Exmouth, Australia fotheringhamWed 11th Jan We left Coral Bay feeling like we had been cheated by the weather for some quality snorkeling. Normally, you can see Manta and Dugong on the boat tours, but none had been able to go because of the storms. It's a shame as Coral Bay has a nice little charm about it, but come April 2006 they will start building a Hilton hotel, which will take away the character and change the face of the town for ever. Two hours up the coast and we arrived in Exmouth, which turned out to be another ...
Exmouth, Australia richsarasloperThe Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range areas are known for their beautiful sandy beaches, amazing crystal turquoise sea, having some of the top dive sites in the world and lots of wildlife in the National Park we were quite excited about our two days. We weren't disappointed. We spent our time photographing Emus and Kangaroos, walking on the white sandy beaches and swimming in chilly but beautiful turquoise seas. We also did 2 scuba dives at the US Navy Pier, which is hailed as being one of the to...

This was how we spent our whole three days here!

In the evening at our campsite, they had a 'happy hour’ where everyone brought their drinks up to a communal picnic table to watch the sunset and chat. This was the first real socialising we’d seen at a campsite; usually people keep themselves to themselves apart from the odd ‘Hi, how are ya?’ It was nice to chat to a range of people who were in ...
Exmouth, Western Australia, Australia rachandstu... a suburb called Jesmond. However, frequently, something is lost in transit and the pronunciation of these place names can be a little squaff. Consequently, Exmouth is actually pronounced Ex-Mouth - equal stress on both syllables. In a few days, I will be travelling to Derby - Durh-by. Weird.

We awoke in Ex-Mouth with excitement. Zach had the weekend off and had promised to take us to Turquoise Bay, one of the highlights of Ningaloo Reef. As I ...

Stecky pointed us in the direction of our hostel and uttered those words which I like to think of as the travellers’ curse - tell someone who is carrying a over-stuffed rucksack that ‘you can’t miss’ X destination and you will guarantee them two hours of wandering around an industrial estate.

Our hostel ...
Exmouth, Western Australia, Australia rachelhwalsh... br>I don’t want to dwell for too long on the journey itself, since surely the only thing more boring than a 20hour bus journey is someone blogging about a 20hour bus journey. I will therefore try and highlight for you the, erm, highlights.

The first was passing through Midland, an outer(ish) suburb of Perth, long a convenient butt of jokes for people living in the metropolitan area. Think about your typical anti-Welsh banter or anything you’ve ever ...

What an experience.

Tom and Alex have gotten right into campground living. Exmouth, Western Australia, Australia hindmarsh... Alec protested loudly about the prospect of walking along yet more gorges, we managed to spend a happy day exploring some and looking from spectacular lookouts. The heavily weathered range is of limestone, and contains an extensive network of caves and numerous sink-holes, small and large.

Last on our itinerary was a stop at the Kailis Prawn Fishery, where we tangled with wild Exmouth king prawns ...
Exmouth, Western Australia, Australia atlarge... is one tidal river crossing though so we have to make sure we cross at low tide. We checked out the crossing at 1 hour before afternoon low tide and found it was just a trickle of water. And the low tide in the morning is supposed to be even lower so we should be fine.
Back at the van, we finally cracked out the shower tent and had beautiful refreshing showers with our Coleman Hot Water Service. It was luxury!!
