Compulsory stopover in Japan

Staying overnight at the Nikko Narita airport hotel, compliments of JAL, Japan Airlines. Having previously been given 10,000 yen from a Japanese friend back home (~$140 NZ), spent about half of this on an authentic Japanese style meal at the hotel restaurant. A bit pricey for one meal but hey, my friend had meant for me to eat real Japanese food while in Japan! For that I got the seafood meal, a big rectangular tray with a variety of little dishes, each containing some Japanese delicacy, incl...

Back in Japan

Hokey cokey.... left Broome on 25th Sept, and got to Sydney about 7.30pm. As some people know, I had no intension of going back to Kings Cross, and V was not even a consideration. Well, I first went to New town, and started looking for a Hostel, now at this time, most will be shutting of already shut, and I couldn't even see any. So after a measly 20-30 mins walking about (I didn't have the lonely planet guide anynore) what I thought was pretty much alike to Kings X except more alternative pe...

Tokyo Is Bigger Than I Imagined

Ten hours ago I was sitting in an airport lounge in Sydney. Two hours ago I touched down in the most populated city in the world. Welcome to Tokyo, Japan, a city with a population greater than that of Australia and a transport system that goes like clockwork. I thought this whole transit thing would be a breeze, but there's more city to this city than I previously imagined and, although getting as far as I currently am (the Hotel Nikko Narita), my plans might not be as grand as I once believe...

Santa and Shabu-Shabu!

... style. There are large electric pots on the table with boiling water or broth. Then thinly sliced carrots, enoki mushrooms, and bokchoy cabbage are served ready to put in the pot. After that comes very thin sliced frozen meat, usually beef. You are to take the meat slices and swish it around in the boiling pot – shabu-shabu is Japanese for swishing. Japan Begins....

... I stopped at a small traditional restaurant inside the gardens near the museum which was beautifully set out in a traditional style with tatami mats and low tables which looked over a pretty little tea garden. Through a mix of basic english, my trusty phrase book and sign language I was served an extremely tasty chicken terriyaki and then headed out once more to walk through the beautifully peaceful gardens before heading back to the Radisson to collect my stuff and ...
