    There were a few English speakers ahead of me in the check in line. They had Canadian flags sewn onto their backpacks. It's a common tactic to avoid being ID'd as an American in a world where people might not like that. Still disgraceful, I thought. Then I saw their Canadian passports.     ... Beautiful buildings with almost cliche grandmothers on tall balconies sweeping, cleaning linens, and making small talk with other grandmothers on similarly tall balconies. This can't be real.

    I need two things, besides sleep: (1) a Euro power converter since my phone and camera are about dead, and (2) a restroom. It's early on Sunday though, so the only place that's open is this small church. It's nice. Looks like a mass is about to break out though. ...

    ... us to our cabins. Opening the door it's quite a shock...inside is a cupboard with 2 bunk beds and a corner door that houses the shower and toilet. This is the best cabin I could book and it's pretty bloody basic. The mattress feels like something from Cell Block H, there is 1 pillow per bunk and something that passes for a sheet cum duvet. Oh well as I said, it's only 1 night.

    ... as the first time I saw them. Interestingly, the most in tact building is a brothel and you can see the paintings on the walls depicting various sexual acts. Our guide told us that it would work like a menu for travellers who did not speak the local language. You could also see the outline of penises throughout the ruins pointing in the direction of the brothels. We had a quick lunch and I bought some interesting melon and cream liqueurs that are made locally in Pompei. ...
