Hay

Another days driveand passing by a beautiful lake called Lake Benanee and all day long having the feel of real wide open spaces, we stayed the night at the Nicholas Royal Hotel in Hay. You guessed it, a walk away from the local RSL club. Hay used to be the NSW headquarters of Cobb and Co, the famous coach Company, like the Australian Wells Fargo. They have a fully restored coach on display, licensed to carry 17 people but actually big enough for about 6. Folks must have been smaller in those ...

Just a quick stop over in Hay for the night. Hay seems to be quite a farming town with alot of sheep shearing.
It was a very hot day in Hay so it was a great relief to see a nice clean cool pool in Hay Caravan Park. We had a quick dip before having a ...

Rest day - Trevor 'Butticus' and Alex cooked us breaky this morning - bacon, eggs, omelettes and pancakes - fantastic!

Got the washing out and then oiled the chain and cleaned the bike. Day 26 - Balranald to Hay

... and heard the fireworks later in the evening - we were all in bed by that time because we were all so tired!! My lower back, wrists, elbows and the palm of my right hand are all sore - the bitumen is very rough, and with the wind we probably rode a bit differently on our bikes, which used different muscles and joints. The poor bike sounds a bit rattly too.

Rest day again tomorrow - hopefully will fully recover before our ride to Leeton on Sunday - 163kms away.

Hay

Saturday, 15th December, 2007 (Written by Stephen) Driving to Hay A relaxed morning and then packed up and back into Mildura where I bought two cases of the Flip Flop rose and we were off again. Nearly straight away we were across another state border and into NSW. The Sturt Highway virtually runs along the northern side of the Murray River for 80km's until at Euston it heads due east to Balranald and then on to Hay. The ...

Middle of Nowhere, NSW

From out of Canberra we were heading right across the country, Port Augusta way, having no idea what we'd find in between. We stopped for lunch at a lookout over a place called Gundagai, which, apart from having quite a hip name, boasted a lookout over the site of Australia's worst flood in 1852, leading to the settlement being entirely rebuilt, apart from the ...

Photos and oeuflets

... I am putting captions on mine in preparation for a slideshow to be loaded to DVD, so I can play it on the TV. With Ted's at this time, I am just sequencing them, and have replaced some of his with a few of mine as early in the trip for some reason, his camera seemed to be playing up, and a few photos were very over exposed. I was able to improve a few with photographic software, but some I just replaced ...

Sheets and Sheeps

... there were only 6 people there we all had lots of questions as he made the talk so interesting. He sheared a sheet and explained what he was doing as he went - very quickly he did it too. By that time, the rain was bucketing down as we walked back to the museum. By the time we got back to the van park (only 5 minutes), it had stopped, so I very much doubt the drought was broken in this area. Perhaps they may have received some substantial rain somewhere ...

POWs, Bishops and Sim Cards.

... roughly 4.5 metres). There was a DVD telling all about the building of the place and it was explained by engineers and architects - apparently extremely advanced for the time (1889). We even found that the volunteer manning the house was the same volunteer as we had met at the Visitor's center in the morning. She told us that drought breaking rain was expected the next day. Home again and tried a pumpkin pasta recipe which went quite well.

Make Hay while the Sun Shines

... ourselves with the place. We visited the Old Goal Museum, and whilst the building is in very good nick, having been restored, the exhibits were just a bit boring, dusty and looked neglected - shame that they can't get any volunteers to help out. No-one in attendance, just an honesty box - I hope all visitors leave a donation! From there to the station (of course). Passenger services ceased to Hay in 1982 and goods services in 1983, but the railway ...
