Ever try to sleep on a rollercoaster?

Well, the bus ride was a bit of a shambles, but at least it got me here. At the travel agents I'd been shown a series of laminated photographs depicting the luxurious sleeper I'd be making the 14 hour overnight journey on. Unfortunately the coach that came to pick me up looked more like the old Kings bus I used to make the journey to school on; old, decrepid, paint flaking off, flat tyres...you know...just not 'safe' looking. I was one of the first people on the bus and I sat and watched peop...

Chuc Mung Nam Moi!

Eating sizable portions of turkey and stuffing, watching NFL football games, and hanging out with family are typical traditions of Thanksgiving in the States. A related holiday occurs in Vietnam in late January and I had the fortunate opportunity to partake in all of its festivities...whether I wanted to or not... The Tet Festival in Vietnam is traditionally a 3-day celebration of the New Year, which is the same dates as the Chinese New Year. Most Vietnamese take work off for the 3 days and v...

Up to Hue

We arrived in Hue at lunchtime and decided to do a city tour. We went to the Citadel which is like the Forbidden City in China but smaller. It is on 12 hectares of land and had many buildings including seperate areas for the men and women and concubines. A lot of it has been ruined with bombings during various wars and they are in the process of trying to rebuild them. [PHOTO_ID_L=on-the-perfume-river.jpg We then took a Dragon boat cruise down the perfume river. Our Dragon boat had steering d...

... when I took a City tour, it wasn't too bad. Really interesting tour, booked at the DMZ cafe, with a great guide who spoke good English - we saw 3 tombs in the morning and after lunch went to the citadel and then a pagoda, finishing with a boat trip back up the river to the centre of town. Worth doing as it brings the history more to life than just reading from the guide book.
<br ...

Really long and arduous one.

... Kind of, it turned out that they didn’t have any bread, or white rice for that matter. Hmmm, there goes the wholesome food thing, so the next best was instant noodles, which they had a lot of. I thought a couple fried eggs wouldn’t be too bad, nor would a boiled egg. I’m not much of a complainer about food, I’ll eat pretty much anything, see: Among the Hmong. But after being sick and still feeling a queasy, the oily noodles, ridiculously greasy fried eggs, and ...

Pagodas, Tombs, and Rain

... with a ball cap for protection, ended up buying a bright purple poncho from a kind lady. It did keep off the rain but was hot and uncomfortable—kind of like wearing a full-length plastic bag, which it sort of was. I had a small travel umbrella which kept the top of my head dry but the rest of me was literally sopping. Some intersections were flooded, and we skirted around these as best we could but did slog through ankle deep water periodically. At one point the roadway we were ...

No Way, We're in Hue!

... tour," we noticed it was really starting to rain so took up the offer of a friendly cyclo driver and climbed into his vehicle/converted tricycle. It was a very tight squeeze, and I had to crouch in between Bill's legs. We were then basically wrapped in a tarp which was fastened to the contraption. We were able to peer out through a small slit between the tarp and the awning of the cyclo, which could be construed as a good thing as we were kept dry and able to see ...

All By Myself (but not at all)

... charge (not happy about that). Although each of the tombs was unique, all tombs consist of the same basic parts: a pavillion, a temple for worship, a sepulchre where the remains of the emperor are buried, a honor courtyard flanked with stone animals and guards and a lotus pond. The most interesting of the three tombs contained an extremely ornate sepulchre, decorated with colorful stones and pictures of the emperor.

I was exhausted after the tour, which ran over and lasted nearly ...
