Renee's first African accident.

... electricity has yet to be a steady addition to life.
I am now understanding why most people chose to cook over fires rather than stoves. And if they do choose the stove option, they are gas stoves.
I have been leaving my phone and my computer plugged in whenever I am in my room so that if the power does decide to grace Ghana with its presence, I am prepared.
And let me say, a ceiling fan makes a world of difference in heat.

But anyway ...

We start our rounds by 10am. a group of about 6 nurses and I go through to each patient to check their vitals. This goes pretty quickly, because rooms are shared, so only 3 rooms of the ward are being used.

There are no machines in this hospital. the most technologically advanced piece of equipment i saw all day was a thermometer. To check vitals, we use a ...

Ghana and its many adventures...

... some of the nicest I have ever met. They call their country "a very peaceful country," which is true in all aspects.

The first day I took the shuttle into Accra with a group of friends from the ship. From there we went shopping, ate, had a beer, and waited to meet up with a student that was on our ship who was from Morocco. After meeting up with Nei (the local student) we were all going to head to Cape Coast to go and visit ...

... day since we joined cross country. Also, walking is pretty good exercise when you do it for an hour or so at a time (which i did twice today when i was bored...walking 45 minutes burns about 180 calories for my weight--i found that on this cool site http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/c bc) and it kills a lot of time in the process (which also helps out a lot on days when i dont have class).

Aside from that, something that has also put ...

OUT IN ACCRA

Morning: last meal all together as a group. We ate at the guest center, and as usual had baked beans, toast, eggs, and instant coffee or tea and water. Then we went to our health orientation. That was tiring…but I did find out that one student in our group had just gotten over swine flu, which was kind of funny. Other than that it was same old, same old—don't drink the water, try to eat hot fried food if ...

A highly educated man, Suraj was asked by the bank managers why he doesn't get a blue collar job instead of running around selling coalpots to rural people. His answer is simple and is always the same – He loves what he his doing.

Every day Suraj Wahab, wakes up and jumps into his car, talking into the phone all the time and making the wheels of his business go around. Between visiting his customers, buying roofing ...

Lots of stuff!

... hogging the fan! They had “lights off” so the fan in the house wasn’t working. So I started fanning everybody in the room, including myself, of course. I wasn’t going to torture myself. It was really freakin’ hot! Okay, so Uncle’s sister, Agia Hannatu, gave me a pile of photo albums to look at. I started looking through, saw pictures of family members. There was one picture of her in this gorgeous dress, so I told her that I really liked ...

Working in Ghana for 2 months

... Kumasi don't waste your time going there. It was the only time in my life since working in Africa that I wanted to go home so bad was the treatment from the so called locals! Final thoughts on Ghana Overall Ghana is a great country, it is very challenging in terms of travelling compared to other parts of Africa but it is quite rewarding and I have some amazing memories of the place. Overall it is in the top 4 countries in Africa for along with South Africa, Tanzania and Namibia.
