Historical Traveler Reviews Newcastle Hotel Virginia Beach

      Paid extra for the roaches

      from

      Never again.

I can't even begin to discribe the bathroom to you but I'll try. The tub was actually falling apart. The panelling had falling off which exposed mold and dirt and yes, roaches. It was gross. I was afraid to touch the blankets on the bed, they should have been replaced years ago. They were unclean and very worn. The final insult to injury was how rude the manager was.

I would not recommend this place to my dog.

No towel but lots of ants

      from

We chose this hotel based on the reviews. But. this hotel is nothing special. The rooms are dated and musty. The staff didn't cleaned the room in four days. Unfortunately, we had a big tub IN the room. It was full of sand. We had to beg for fresh towels and soap (we finally bought bars at the local WalMart) They would give us only one extra pillow. And, the room had a host of ants. This hotel is run by the same people trying to sell timeshare at the new Boardwalk. I have one suggestion: Rent a timeshare if you are staying close to a week. You will have more room, a complete kitchen and the rooms are newer. I am not sure I would buy a timeshare from the same company that manages the New Castle.

      An average rating

      from

We stayed here August 2003. Selected the hotel after reading the other highly rated reviews, but was somewhat disappointed. The hotel is nothing special. Parking lot is cramped. Room is average size, bathroom was clean but dimly lit with missing floor tiles around jacuzzi. Tiny refrigerator. Avoid the "concierge"...she is there to sell timeshares.

Free use of bicycles a nice touch.

      Great Hotel

      from

I visited Virginia Beach August 2003 and I was trying to find a name-brand hotel to stay at in Virginia Beach, but after reading several reviews I chose New Castle. The location was good, the room was clean, the staff was friendly and every room has an oceanfront view with a jacuzzi. The only problem I had was with the remote control and the maintenance staff was speedy when trying to resolve, and after two days they went to a store and bought a new one. The one downfall with this hotel is that there is no outdoor pool, only an indoor pool, and it had a very stong chlorine odor because it was cleaned it every night. For the money, compared to more prestigious hotels it was well worth it. I had a great time and found the hotel to be what I expected and I probably would return again.

      Very impressed

      from

This is an excellent hotel that I have decided I will stay at every time I go to Virginia Beach. Usually I have been a little disappointed at where I have stayed. This was a beautiful room. The staff was great and always available. Great location to everything!

      A Good Experiance

      from

Had a very pleasant experience third week of May 03. Room was very nice, clean, and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. Indoor pool was under repair, but they offered usage of pool at one of their sister locations. maid service came very early one day, and not at all the next (you may need to call and let them know your room is ready for service). The most gracious experience came the second day of my scheduled four day stay. I had an unexpected death in my family and had to leave two days early. I didn't expect any type of refund since (like all hotels) 72 hour notice is required. As I packed my car, I was asked to come into the lobby where one of the staff informed me that they would be refunding my last nights stay -- kindness like that isn't found that often anymore. I would definitely go back to The New Castle Hotel.

      Troubled customer

      from

I took a one night trip to VA Beach last year, kind of as a one night love get-a-way with my fiance. We booked the hotel ahead of time, and was told that they had a honeymoon suite and we reserved it. It was supposed to have the jacuzzi and all in the room, with champagne waiting. We got there and it was all a different story. The room was late getting ready, it was a regular room, no jacuzzi, no champagne, not romantic getaway. We tried to swim in the indoor pool there and the chlorine was so strong that it burned your skin, and you could barely breathe because of the smell. We are going back to VA Beach this weekend, but are steering clear of this hotel for our trip.

      Honeymoon

      from

My husband and I stayed in the New Castle on our Honeymoon. We accually ended up staying an extra night because there was so much to do. Loved the veiw. It was a perfect honeymoon spot. We have already desided to return there on our one year aniversery.

      Goin' back for more!

      from

We usually do not go to VA Beach for vacation since we live so close, we usually like to travelto other beaches. Due to my husbands workschedule it was more feasible to stay closer tohome incase he had meetings that he could go toand return to our vacation. (Sad but true.)We loved our stay! We had a wonderful view ofthe ocean, we had a jacuzzi in our room, freeuse of their bikes--which aren't cheap if you rentthem there! It was the perfect get a way andwe're going back for more this year!!

      Had a wonderful time!

      from

Having seen the west coast last summer, we decided to try the east coast this year. We thought San Diego was absolutely beautiful until we went to Virginia Beach. We've already decided to go back to the New Castle next year :)

... for poor visibility we were ducking in and out of the channel to avoid Navy traffic.

During the trip down anything that wasn't fastened down below ended up on the floor in the salon. Left Annapolis at 2 Monday and arrived at Top Rack Marina at about 2 this afternoon. Rewarded ourselves with a great dinner out at the Amber Lantern Restaurant. Early to bed. Up at 5:30 tomorrow to get underway at first light.

      Disappointing Virginia Beach!

      ... the next day!

We took a walk along part of the 3 mile boardwalk in Virginia Beach - what a disappointment! I read somewhere it's been named one of Top 10 Boardwalks so we were looking forward to it. It's nothing more than a bare, wide, concrete, ( yes concrete, not a board insight) highway with 1970's style boring hotels fronting it. No planters or flowers, some grass & plants but absolutely no ...

... to dine while you watch the film! Very good idea. We watched Let's Be Cops which was very funny. We walked back along the seafront and happened on the tail end of an open-air gig for a rock band. The lead singer was a Billy Idol impersonator, and it was all very entertaining. The band ended and one of the boats out to sea started a fireworks display, which was beautiful, reflected on the black ocean. We walked back and got ready for the next day. That's all, over and ...

... and exit it just SE of Hatteras. From our starting point pretty far east of the Gulf Stream, it would not have been beneficial to head west to enter the stream further south and take advantage of its north bound current.

The weather for the passage played out pretty much as forecast. We had to get through a high pressure ridge with no wind on day 2, but day 3 winds returned from the ...

      Thunderstorm. A.K.A Flash Flood

... We were awoken to the sound of gazebos
blowing down the campsite and our tent unpegging its self. Vic
retired to the Patriot for a dry nights sleep. Me and John braved it.
And what a mistake. In a matter of minutes we were soaked. The tent
had pulled the pegs out and started to blow down. We were wet
through. Once we packed the tent up, the sun came out and we moved
on. Also John got pulled over. 14 MPH over the speed limit. No
      repercussions though.
