As dusk descends, the promised monsoon rains have not quite materialised but it is cold and very windy. It's good to know we will in hot and sunny climes quite soon.
Luggage is nearly packed. Judith has been scouring the shops for suitable light clothing and we have vast quantities of medical items including insect repellents and malaria tablets.
No room for the cricket bat I'm afraid.

... machten wir gemeinsam einen Spaziergang durch den Ort Corbridge und schauten uns die romanische „St. Andrew's Church“, erbaut im 8. Jahrhundert, an. Interessant war die aus dem 17. Jahrhundert stammende Brücke über den Fluss Tyne. Die Brücke wird heute noch von Autos, im durch Ampeln geregelten Einbahnverkehr, benutzt. Ebenso beeindruckend war die Anlage der englischen Stadt mit ihren, z. T. historischen Gebäude. Nach dem „Dinner“ plauderten wir noch einige Zeit ...

... for an hour in the old City Pool.

Newcastle has a long history. It has some remnants of old town walls, a few 17th century buildings, a Castle Keep and an elegant, curved street of 19th century town homes. It’s a university town and very lively with young people, especially at night. There are lots of monuments, busts and plaques commemorating local heros; a large indoor market ...

Newcastle

... today was possibly the coldest so far, no rain, sun out but a dare say it didn't get over 6 degrees. Today we explored the city, it's not as well preserved with old fortifications like York but we did see the old gate tower that was the entrance to the old city but other then that there wasn't too much. Most of the buildings date back a hundred years or so and look amazing but nothing much older.

Historical Traveler Reviews Newcastle Gateshead Marriott Hotel MetroCentre

Good as other reviewers had said!

    from year2000

On the recommendations of other TripAdvisor reviewers we booked two nights at the Marriott last weekend. We were not disappointed. All the staff made us feel very welcome (the duty manager carried our bags to the car in the rain despite our protests that we could manage!) The bedroom was clean and very comfortable. The breakfast buffet had a good selection and was well presented. The leisure facilities were good and I would recommend the beauty treatments on offer (especially the Indian Head massage!) Taxis into Newcastle are under £10 so this is a good base to explore the North East (visit the Anwick gardens whilst you are there you wont be disappointed)

    Brilliant breakfast, superb leisure facilities!

Just returned from a 1 night stay at the Marriott, had a lovely time, Myself, husband and 14 year old. 14 year old stayed in same room and only paid for breakfast £5.00. Superb spacious room, delicious breakfast with huge choice and fantastic leisure club with sauna, steam room and pool. The gym is very well equipped and the young man in charge very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend!

    Fantasic Weekend

    from anonymous

Have just arrived back from a fantasic weekend break at the Metrocentre Marriott Hotel with my partner for my birthday. Arrived on the Friday to find room not ready (it was only 12.40) so we were changed to another room which was. Room fantasic, took the Business Class upgrade on the fifth floor. Staff friendly and helpful, we were even given shop discount vouchers from the Porter! Evening meal taken in the hotel restaurant that night, chef sent two portions of chips fee of charge to apologise for the wait, even though there wasn't one!! Breakfast on the Sat and Sun morning brilliant good choice and tasted great. All in all a fantasic stay in a fantastic hotel cannot fault a single thing, and I cannot understand why anyone would write a bad review on this hotel!! Will def be returning soon.

A great place for shopping and relaxing

    from LjoJo

We stayed at the Marriott for two nights. The staff were really friendly and made us feel very welcome, and solved any problems instantly.

Very nice, clean, large room. The bathroom was spacious and impeccably clean. Wonderful large bed - must be the largest I've seen in any hotelroom ever.

Beware that you are charged to anything removed from them minibar even if you put it back at once. That resulted in a fairly large minibar bill - this was solved instantly by contacting reception -no fuss!

The breakfast buffet was very good. It was a busy week-end but they managed fine without queues.

Splendid location for the Metro shopping centre - largest in Europe. Be advised there is a bus service if you dont want to walk the quarter mile. No nedd to go into Newcastle centre for anything - everything is there at the hotel or nearby.

We will definitely return - then me will try the leisure clus as well - didn't have the time for that this time.

    Excellent hotel

    from Dunc

A typical Marriott hotel really, beautifully furnished room, efficient staff and a lovely cooked breakfast buffet. The swimming pool was very big for this class of hotel. Food and drink in the bar were a little pricey but very tasty. Hotel is beautifully mainained. No complaints at all, my partner particularly liked the short walk to the Metrocentre shopping mall!

There's no real charm or style here, just a very comfotable and efficient hotel which wont cause you any pain or give you cause to moan.

    What a fantastic hotel

    from anonymous

I have just come back from a three day working break and stayed at the marriott metro centre hotel. The hotel was fantastic. The rooms were big, bright and airey, decorated to an excellent standard. The bathroom was lovely, and very clean.

The staff that worked at the hotel were very friendly and helpful, they put me at ease.

Breakfast was fantastic and room service was delivered promptly and with a smile.

I have stayed at many hotels over the recent years and the marriott was definately one of the best if not the best.

    Great choice

    from anonymous

Usually use Malmaison when available but ended up here at the gateshead marriott. Am an expat geordie so go back to the toon a lot and stayed most places. My visits are usually over weekends and I couldnt fault the marriott.

Even at its busiest times found the staff helpfull and pleasant, the beds are as comfortable as your going to get and the big plus for me is the way they deliver breakfast service. Even at the peak time they escort you to table and ensure you get your coffee and toast delivered. Believe me if you've joined a sunday morning breakfast scrum at some hotels you'll understand and appreciate how much this means..............

Enjoy yhe marriott gateshead, I have booked it again for next weekend over and above my usual first choice

    Fabulous Hotel

    from kris.sp

I have stayed at this hotel and also eaten on numerous occasions. My partner and I are also booked to be married here next year. I find that the bad comments about this hotel are unprofound. This is a great hotel with wonderful staff. It is clean, cheap and friendly.

In fact, on the last occassion we were here, Paul 'Gazza' Gasgoine was having coffee, as he is a regular at the gym every morning.

    Poor customer service

    from anonymous

I'd just like to say this hotel is a rip off. Even from the booking stage we were booked into a third floor (when we specified a first floor room).

We were moved to a first floor room where the heating didn't work correctly, and the carpets stunk of sweaty feet. Also, the place looked like a building site with carpets missing and wires hanging from the cealing (a health & safety issue)

The meals were expensive, £10.95 for one chicken breast and some boiled onions and the customer service was absolutly disgusting.

1/ No we were not addressed Sir/Madam.

2/ The bread buns were dry

3/ We had food literally shoved in front of us.

4/ They were out of stock of some courses.

5/ The tables were so sticky the salt/pepper shakers were stuck to it.

Additionally, when exiting the car park an access code is required BUT the keypad is out of reach (too close to the gate) and we had to get out the car (in the rain) to enter the code.

My advice - dont consider going there!

    Home from Home

I have stayed at the Marriott on 4 different occasions and would be very disappointed if , when visiting Newcastle again , I had to stay somewhere else .

The standard of the rooms and general hygiene is excellent . The staff are always pleasant and very helpful . Families with young children are made to feel welcome.

The location of the hotel is ideal for a shopping trip as the Metrocentre and Ikea are within walking distance .

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to enjoy their stay in pleasant atmosphere and surroundings .
