Thai-mmmm for an update

That's right folks... prepare yourself for 3 weeks of bad jokes involving "thai". Profuse apologies in advance.

2 full days done and dusted in Bangkok and it's safe to say I'm loving it here.

Friday
morning rolls around and it seems like a good time to get out of
wherever it was that I was staying and head on down to Khao Sahn Road,
where all the backpackers (and cheapskates such as myself) congregate.
Transportation
is in the form of a fluorescent pink taxi.... ...

Memories of yesteryear

Yesterday was our first full day in Bangkok and our first mission of the day was to go to the Korean Airlines office. After 7 weeks and 4 countries, we've decided to forego Myanmar on this trip because everything is starting to look a bit the same. As they say around here often "Same, same but different", which is a very wise saying because it's so true.

Those who are big fans of Myanmar will not agree with this perception because it's a very different country in the end, and the peopl...

Review of Thailand

Last day in Thailand (and in Southeast Asia) so here's the customary review, based again on a few cities visited.

The good:
- Fried bananas... scrumptilicious!
- Thai food in general: anyone with a half decent palette, distinguishing tastebuds and a slight tolerance for spiciness will agree with us that Thai food is amongst the finest cuisine in the world
- More modernised than its neighbours, and therefore more prosperous and more advanced (at least in the larger cities)
-...

Arrival in Bangkok

After a surprisingly good 18 hour journey from Dublin via London, we arrived in Bangkok fairly awake and energetic. I actually managed to get some sleep on the plane which is a first! We're not planning on spending a lot of time here as Bangkok is mainly a big metropolitan city, crowded and hectic. We'll be doing some of the city's sights in 2 weeks when Angie arrives from Richmond. Our hotel is just off the Khao San Road near the river just west of the city centre. The area is basically a ba...

Well we arrived in Bangkok after the worst day ever!! First of all we only received our passports back from the Thai Embassy the day before we were due to fly!! Then Dublin Airport's radar went down and it looked like we were facing long delays which meant we'd miss our connecting flight in Heathrow! Then just before it was time to go to the airport a bus went on fire on the M50 so the road was closed off!!! Then....we nearly missed our flight cos they put us on a different flight without mak...

HAPPY NEW YEAR

December 31 Time has gone by so fast! We go to the corner vendor for toasted bread with sweet milk and fresh squeezed orange juice, then off to the store for groceries and water, snacks too! This afternoon we are going to take the boat down the river and then back again. While waiting we speak with 4 young guys and they tell us they are going to the end of the boat line and then catching the sky train to the big mall area. We decide that we will do that too and check out the area as this is w...

Hello everyone! Here are some photos of our stay in bangkok! We stayed at two different places both within 5 minute walk of eachother. The one on koh San road had a roof top pool :) The second one was located on the street with the clubs and night markets! Most of our pictures are taken there! We also went to a floating market and a tuk tuk city tour! I will add captions to photos to explain better! :) xo Ecce N' Steve

Not so sure!

21st January Just starting to lose track of days and dates!! Good job I'm keeping a journal or it could be anytime, any place!! Up early today - had to catch the VIP bus to Vientaine (this means a big bus usually) but we seemed to be lucky and for some reason had a mini bus - trouble was we decided it was the 'wacky races' and the driver was trying to break all time records on the journey from Vang Vieng to Vientaine!! Talk about fast - lucky there was no sheer drops today!! We actually did t...

Back in Bangkok!

25th January What a lovely sleep - comfy bed, hot water, tv - all the mod cons at New Siam 2!! Up early (as usual!) as I wanted to go to Chatuchak Weekend Market - wow this is the market to beat all markets! Apparently it has more than 8000 stalls and I can well believe it! Took the skytrain, which dropped me off straight outside, and just wandered for a couple of hours - it sells just about everything including animals! I tell you what if I lived in Bangkok I would have about 100 puppies now...

Heading Home

Well, getting back to Bangkok turned out completely unlike what Karen and I had planned. With my time on the road at an end, and her about to head to China, we thought we'd say our goodbyes on Phi Phi and take separate ferries, me to Phuket to catch a flight to Bangkok and she to Ko Lanta to chill for a couple days and plan her next steps. Turns out our "open" ferry tickets weren't so open, and she was forced to head to Phuket. Not the plan, but I wasn't complaining. Arriving in Phuket, we co...

Super Hotel, werden wieder hinfahren

from gottago1

Guesthouse in bester Lage!

from dirk-on-earth

Excellent Service and Value

from Grinadam
I recently returned from a two week trip to Thailand. New Siam II was the perfect affordable option in Bangkok. I spent four nights there at the beginning of my trip (while I watted day after day and got suit fittings) a night on my trip up from Ko Samui to Chiang Mai and a final night before flying back to JFK.

New Siam II was fantastic because it provided a clean, safe and secure option. It is very conveniently located to Pier 13 of the River Taxi which gives you access to the BTS skytrain if you take the 30 minute or so ride to the central pier.

The rooms are not cleaned during your stay unless you request them. The AC worked excellent, the room had a safe, and an electronic key card. At night there was absolutely no noise from neighboring rooms and very little street noise as it is set back in an alley. The location also allows for convenient access to the Khao San Rd scene if that is what you are looking for. Although the Khao San party is close by the party atmosphere does not travel back to New Siam. I was very happy to see that they did not allow for outside guests to come up to rooms which is essential for keeping out sex tourists.

The taxi service to the airport was cheap and convenient. The laundry service was efficient and actually got the stains out of my clothing (i cannot say the same about some of the other laundry services I used in Thailand). I didn't use the pool but a lot of families were enjoying it. The restaurant was good to have a snack at or to start out the day for breakfast. The people working there are genuinely glad to see you and are quite kind. I will definitely stay here again and again. Oh yeah, and the luggage storage was fantastic at only 15 baht a night. I paid 790 baht a night for a room.

New Siam II was a total steal. Be sure to tip the restaurant employees big. They were great!

The best value place to stay in the Koh San Road Area

from stratford123
We have stayed in the New Siam II a number of times over a few years and, in our view, it is easily the best value hotel in the Koh San Road area.

Prices at the New Siam have gone down significantly over the last couple of years due to the increased competition from new, large hotels nearby. This makes it even better value than before! We stayed here again in December 2005 after spending a night from the Rambuttri Village Inn, around the corner. The Village Inn had gone downhill from when we stayed a couple of years ago (and had cheap opening offers). We should have just gone to the New Siam II directly again!

It is consistent in quality for a budget hotel. It's clean, secure, the staff are polite and efficient, the tour desk is helpful/fairly priced and food is basic but cheap and good quality. All in all, there's not much more it can do to be best value in the area (and we checked again all the other and cheaper accommodation nearby, in true backpacker style!).

Super hotel, will return

from gottago1
This is the first place we stayed in Thailand (had read a good review of it in The Times), and were very much impressed. It is just off Khao San Road in a quiet area that is a great base for getting around the city. I think it may be near a river boat pier. The staff was friendly and very efficient and there is a nice little cafe and lobby on the ground floor as well as an internet cafe and travel agency. It is a safe place with key card entry for the rooms as well as security cameras in the hallways and my room had a programmable safe as well. The bathroom is a little bit small, but for the price and location, who can complain? The rooms are clean, simple but nice. We had a/c and satellite t.v. They also have a baggage storage room for a small fee. We had booked another place for our return trip to this city after seeing the south, and wished that we had booked into this place again and will definitely do so when we return someday. Everybody is cheerful at this place -staff and guests alike. When you stay at this place you are near the river and there is a nice little park on the riverside (around the fortress thing) just a few minutes walk away where we watched a little pop concert and there are nice little inexpensive restaurants nearby too. The Grand Palace and National Museum aren't too far of a walk away either. You can book ahead on the internet and that may be a good idea in high season as this place was definitely a favorite with a lot of people when we were there just before Christmas.

Comfort near Khao San

from Morph
This is a great guesthouse about 3 minutes walk from Khao San in Bangkok - in fact it is just down an alley from Thanon Phra Athit next to the river. You can catch the airport bus A2 to the stop just across the road for 100Bht. It has a nice outdoor pool and a restaurant on the ground floor which is open from 6am until 10:30om daily and serves a large variety of Thai and Western food at good prices.

The rooms have either fan or air-con and are very secure (they use a key card system). I stayed in a air-con double for 790Bht per night and it was large and clean with a TV. The bathroom was small with a shower and sink and although basic it was clean. The rooms had a safe and a set of scales (very handy for weighing luggage) but no fridge. There is a lift which helps when transporting luggage and the hotel will organise a taxi to the airport for you for 290Bht. There is an onsite internet cafe and tour desk.

This hotel is a bit more expensive than most in the area but worth it for the clean, quiet safe surrounds. The staff are helpful, even when busy. It is a very short walk to Khao San and it is easy to find tuk-tuks or take the water taxis as the stop is just across the road. The bus to Chatachuk market on the weekend also leaves from across the road. There are many good restaurants and a 7-eleven nearby. The New Siam group has an online booking system which can be found via their website.

Back again

from A TripAdvisor Member
We are returning to Bangkok again this week - this is our 9th trip to the city in 2 years. I have stayed in a variety of accomodation in Thailand from 5 star hotels to huts on a beach, but you cannot beat the New Siam 2 for service, friendliness, location, value for money and cleanliness. It is a wonderful hotel, the travel desk is fairly priced and definitely not a rip off, the rooms are secure and the staff do everything they can to help you.

You couldn't do much better!

Better than great for the price

from BrazilianCanadian
Initially I thought the prices were too good to be true given the description on the their website), but it was true. Very reasonable prices for a good place. Granted it is not a resort, you probably just want to sleep, shower, the occasional cooling down at the pool, and for that it's good. The washroom could be a little larger, but hey, who wants to spend more than 15-20min a day in there? I had little interaction with the people there, but when I did they were nice. Oh, and the location was good if you wanted to stay close, but not inside Khao San. Bottomline, I'd stay there again ...

Very nice guest house

from Namaimo
The New Siam 2 has a great location and very good service. We used it as our "home base" while doing multiple side trips to Kanchanaburi, Ko Samui, Cambodia, etc. They held our bags for us each time, at a very reasonable rate, and even did our laundry while we were gone. It was waiting for us every time. The food is pretty good, and the pool is nice - a rarity in guest houses of this pricing level. We paid 750 baht per night, and then 700 baht after the 2nd night or so. I don't think they advertise the 700 rate.

The beds are quite hard, but otherwise the rooms are clean and well-kept, and the air-con worked like a charm. Highly recommended...
