Getting closer to the equator

... is scratched and sweaty) we managed to reach the waterfall. Showering below it has never felt so rewarding.

Tomorrow we are off to the Togean Islands. A little secluded piece of land rising out of the Gulf of Tomini, a few kilometers south of the equator with white sand beaches, little beach resorts and great snorkelling. Or so we heard. Let's see if we will really find this piece of paradise. The 13 hour boat ride better be worth it...

Lembeh Resort - Day 1

... object, and to figure out whether or not you truly got a shot of it when looking at a 2.5inch view screen. All shots had a focal point just a little over from the intended target. Dang it! It wasn't completely without reward however in that there was a tiny baby scorpion fish hanging out on the coral as well. You would never know this guy is going to grow up to be a killer ...

Minahasa to Lembeh: National Geo. On Assignment

... smallness" of Minahasa. Lembeh is a lot bigger and holds a much larger amount of guests. Still, the service was great and things look great for this next phase of our adventure. On to muck diving tomorrow! Black sand, weird critters; it should be awesome. We dive at 8am, 11am and 2:30pm. We also want to dive the house reef tomorrow night. Can't get enough! Bye for now! Minahasa Lagoon Resort & Dive Club - Day 1

... bizzare creatures. We started out at about 20 feet deep and gently sloped down to about 70 feet. Along the way down the slope we saw a few snake eels, a puffer fish, and a lion fish. The muck turned into our first viewing of a coral garden teeming with small colorful fish diving into and around the coral as we ...

Cigarettes & Cap-less Petrol Tanks - Just Say No!

... Sulawesian fishies & boat rides with Indonesians smoking directly over large cap-less tanks of petrol. Feel free to contact me for further details, where required, about each individual attraction. I am happy to oblige and, as per the above, to not be dead... We were lucky enough to spend Eid-Al Fitry with members of the community Will is working with, who were very welcoming and giving despite having so little. We were fed way WAY too much food ...

Lembeh Straits

... to Singapore with Singapore Airlines on one of the new A380 Airbus planes. It was pretty cushy, lots of leg room for a change, and made the 13 hour flight pleasant. After that it was a 3 hour flight to Manado, where I was picked up at the airport and driven to the port, for a short boat ride to the Two Fish Diver resort on Lembeh Island. The resort itself was basic, but had everything you'd need for this kind of holiday, I ...

... captives at that point, but signed on for another 2 nights. Instead, we elected to take a day trip to the highlands, where we visited the local market, Gunung Mahawu (Mount Mahawu), Lake Tondano, and a small pottery village. The market sold all kinds of local delicacies like dog, bats and rats. In preparation for being sold (and eaten), the salesmen use a propane torch to burn the hair off, which also has the unfortunate effect of giving the ...

Forest, bugs and beach

... evening, we were supposed to go for a trek to watch the Tarsiers. These little creatures are nocturnal so it was either catching them just after dusk or waking up at 4am. Just as we prepared to go off, it started to storm. I felt stranded. There was nothing to do there. I had no book to read, no tv to watch, no radio to listen to. Dave and I sat there, staring at the rain storm. And I wondered how it would ...

Hot oven for room, anyone?

I woke up completely ****** off. I was drenched in my own sweat. The mosquito net didn't work last night, so I was breakfast for all the mosquito in the vicinity. To add insult to the injury, the puny fan wasnt working and there was no electricity in the whole compound. We found out that the electricity supply is on only from 6pm til 6am. It's 9am. And that means I have been sleeping in an oven for the last ...
