Conference in Kuwait

... I boarded my flight for Doha, Qatar... many hours later I arrived at an airport designed around a huge Duty Free shop with hoards of people buying everything from watches to cigs to gold jewelry...  after a sleepless night of wandering around the short corridors I boarded my next flight to Kuwait... arriving at 3:30 a.m. Took a quick taxi to my hotel, The Movenpick...  checked in and headed off to my room with the sound of morning prayers wafting through the leafy oasis of the ...

Kuwait - Safe to visit!

Despite the turbulence of its recent history, Kuwait today is once again beginning to reflect its status as an oil-rich nation. In 1990 Iraq claimed Kuwait as its 19th province, but the Iraqis were expelled by a United States led alliance in a short war in 1991, and now the country is separated from its threatening neighbor by a wall along its border. The ruined capital, Kuwait City, has risen from the ashes of war to become a buzzing metropolis with gleaming high rises ...

More benefits of the Hilton

Well, there are more benefits of the Hilton. First, there are women in bikinis who are not related to the people at work. I didn't go to the Ramadan tent for dinner, but you could eat out on the beach. Now it is time to go home.

Hard Rock Cafe

And with the Hilton being closer to the city, it is a quick trip to eat at restaurants up there as well. Back to the Hard Rock - a great deal - all food is 50% off during Ramadan. At least one good thing during Ramadan. Met up with my old technical manager from my chemical plant days. Wasn't expecting to run into him over here.

Tales From The Sand Box - Episode 6

Dear Family and Friends, Well we have arrived in the lovely city of Dubai and so I thought I would use some of my time while I am on duty today to tell you about Patrol 2. Once again we spent the majority of our time in Iraqi Territorial Waters conducting security patrols around the two big Oil Platforms. This patrol saw a couple of major changes occur. Up until 3 weeks ago, the Commander of all forces in the Northern Arabian Gulf was an Australian, Commodore Steve Gilmore. His time up ...

Arrived in Kuwait in the middle of a dust storm!

... people crawling out of cars and piling into other cars and abandoning their totaled cars. Very crazy. Made it to the hotel, dropped off our bags, headed straight into a security/local customs briefing for an hour and finally bed! I skipped dinner that night and crawled into bed at about midnight, set the alarm for 6am and our first 12 hour work day coming up. Ughh...sleep is highly overrated! haha

I had to see to believe

... especially restaurant and fast food ones, that don't exist in Europe are here, in abundance. Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, Red Lobster...you name it, its here. The two "touristy" attractions in town, besides exploring the different shopping centres, are the Liberation Tower and the Kuwait Towers. I tried to go to the Liberation Tower (so named after the liberation of Kuwait in the early 90s) but it has been closed for security ...
