      Quieter once the day trippers have gone. And they showed QPR on the telly!

      After a fitful night we got up early for our trip to the glacier. At the Hermitage Hotel the place was swarming with Chinese. We learnt later that, with Chinese New Year, many take two weeks off and head for New Zealand. That would explain the Chinese speakers behind the desk and the general absence of westerners.       We were up early on day one, walked up the gravel road to the trail head, got kind of scared by a loose bull who seemed very angry, and started up the river valley. The first part took us through pasture land, up to where the river narrowed and we entered the Stack Conservation Area. From here we travelled through a very neat gorge, travelling up the valley, until we reached Fern Burn Hut, nestled at the apex of 3 valleys.

      ... Kiwi Birdlife Park. There is specially designed nocturnal houses where you view the Kiwis feeding. These little fellows are very cute, The park also features endangered New Zealand birds and reptiles.

      Next we we rode the Gondola high above Queenstown. The Gondola had a vertical rise from 340m to 790m above sea level, The length is 730m and the speed is 4m per second.
