France sucks at Halloween

... English in the entire town. We found our hostel super late at night (and they don't make hostels in France like they did in Spain... no more free internet!). The next morning, we walked into town not really knowing what to see or do. But as we were looking for a quick Petit Dejuner (breakfast) we stumbled upon the Saturday market. We sat at a cafe on the square and had the most amazing breakfast 5 euro can buy if you ...

Amorous or Foolhardy?

... Argh! I tried to get him to go up into the town and explore, but I couldn’t drag him further than a few blocks - worry that we needed to be back in time…?!?!

Finally around 4, they opened the gate so we could drive in. Only to find the ticket office didn’t open until 6pm. While waiting, we talked with a lovely Frenchcouple who were completely unperturbed at our lack of language ...

Over a month in...

... Aix...oh, the Brits abroad, mon dieu! Still, best 6€ I've ever spent. We've also been along to the cinema. Embarassingly, it was to see Fame but I'd like to point out how important cinema, and going to the cinema, is to the French. There are at least 3 cinemas in Aix, and there are huge film posters everywhere. 'Le Cezanne', has it's name lit up, and, unlike at home, the seats are like armchairs and there's plenty of leg room. But, like at home, it's bloody ...

Aix marks the spot

Bonjour avec Aix-en-Provence Cherie
Since the last news we have visited the Cote D'Azur spending time at Monte Carlo and Antibes. We stayed near Antibes at a place called Biot and at night you could hear the seals at nearby Marineland - very strange. It was still quite hot and stickey with more mozzies. Monte Carlo was wall to wall money with billions of dollars in boats and cars. Antibes was similar but it had a lovely old town as well.
We arrived ...

LOST & FOUND IN MARSEILLES- BLUE BALLS & ALL

... 8230; window open inviting… people like ants scurrying around below in a hurry to go nowhere… a big porcelain pot over in the corner… But I’ll have to keep looking. There’s one more possibility, another place here close to the gare. I feel like a bird scurrying around with a piece of straw and no place to lay it down. That’s the only thing Jesus said where he really blew it. "Do the ...

Flights and Arriving in France

... one of Marie's friends, Niama, is living for the summer. She's a filmmaker, and she is about to go to India for a month to make a film about the violence there. There is also a really nice balcony off the back of the house, with a big pool. They have horses and a really nice garden and yard. The whole property is surrounded by a big stone wall, with electronic security gates... so I feel safe!
I didn't wake up til almost 1pm here today. I think I ...

Marseille Day 2 Afternoon

Upon returning from out train trip, we decided to walk to Palais Longchamp (well, we took the metor to Gare Saint-Charles, the main railway station first). The Palais Longchamp is huge, with a number of steps to go up. There were a couple of bridal groups there, having there wedding photos taken. After admiring and exploring the front, we went through the top into the park behind and sat down ...

... it or not, they of pub culture exported world-wide. So now cigarette smokers seek out open doorways in the train station like wi-fi scum looking for a signal. When they find them, they stand right in them, as though an open door were not a passage but an invitation to congregate. This was a conceptual problem already that smokers have co-opted for themselves. Marseille has some of the cheapest rooms I've seen in a ...

Partying in Marseille

... was had with plenty of dancing. We reluctantly headed for the apartment at 4.30am, gearing myself up for my train to Bandol the next day. Several hours later, laden with luggage once again, I had to do one of the things I was dreading, saying goodbye to Maddy and coming to terms with my being absolutely alone for the first time. It was an awful feeling, that I had to deal with all the way to Bandol where plenty of fresh challenges were awaiting me.
