      The further south we travelled, the state of the Italian econmy or the impact of the GFC became more apparent. Hotels, resorts, large buildings, small buildings, housing estates, houses, all abandoned in various stages of completion.       ... that was closed the other night, which Enzo, Adriana, and Federico all say is the best gelateria in Calabria. They weren't lying. The pistachio gelato was so good it actually made me sad--because I don't think I will ever be able to enjoy pistachio ice cream ever again, it will always be a let down compared to this. I am definitely going to try to go there again before I leave.

      ... It actually has nothing to do with the flavors chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Rather, it references the way that Italians--or at least Southern Italians--pack their gelato to-go. You order three flavors and they are packed right next to each other into a rectangular container. I wish that was how hand-packed ice cream worked in America, it is nice to get to choose more than one! ...
