... my quiet reflection moments in Borneo when I was 17. It was the first time I'd ever travelled overseas, and honestly I didn't really want to go. The Borneo jungle and scenery was so foreign, and the climate so muggy. The smell of sewerage, the foreign food, the different language, culture, people. The fact that I stood out, all white and rich and sweaty. The sinking feeling when I realised that I would never ever fit in. Travelling to Borneo was an unexpectedly challenging ...

Our hotel in Lake Maggiore, Grand Hotel Dino, is magnificently luxurious. The outside is filled with flowers, vine covered gazebos and lush landscaping. The interior has gorgeous paintings, statues and stained glass domes. The rooms are furnished with antique looking furniture and marble floors and fixtures in the bath. Very beautiful and ornate, but maybe a bit hoity toity for my taste. Gorgeous indoor and outdoor pools and ...

... cities, and it seemed to take ages to get past this city. Amazing views from the road. The freeways (or Autostrada) don't go over hills - they go through them. Tunnel after tunnel we went through. We were then into more open countryside where the Italians grow their rice. They are harvesting now and the crops look pretty good. Arrived at the Italian Lakes and our amazing hotel - the Grand Hotel Dino. Great views across the lake and ...

... it existed high up on the mountain. Today, it continues to be used for the occasional special service.

After our visit to Christ the Redeemer, we headed back down the 700 meters of amazing hairpin turns towards the Maratea marina. From there we drove north on the coastal route towards Salerno and Amalphi. Secretly I had hoped we could actually get to Salerno, but the coastal driving is far too pretty and far too windy and slow to cover much ...
