Marseille

Really beautiful train ride along the coast (which in a way it is a shame that the railway is right on the beach) Marseille is a bigger city and not so quaint but the port area is nice. Flew out of Marseille to Lisbon. I know not quite geographically logicall

Life lessons

... explore Marseille for an evening.

Marseille is France's most African city. Certainly just wandering the streets the influence is visible, with kebab joints scattered everywhere. Having survived the day on a croque monsieur and two Snickers bars, I'm ready to dig into some dirty street food. I spot one kebab place doing a brisk business, and I manage to wedge myself and my over sized pack in.

"Bon Soir!" the main behind the counter barks at me

Amorous or Foolhardy?

Over the last months of travel, we’ve met and talked with many people about what we’re doing. As you can imagine, we’re greeted with many responses. Most can’t fathom a trip without end or adgenda. Some say they admire what we’re doing. Setting off onour own, turning our back on convention and creating an adventure. Others think we’re fools. Although the woman who said that ...

NO Marseille for the Caswell's today!!

NO MARSEILLE for us!!! The captain went by when we had 21 foot waves and winds of 50 gusting to 65. It was sunny but not good enough to dock in Marseille, so on to Barcelona we go. In spite of it, we had a great relaxing day and i had a 3 hour nap this afternoon. Naps are totally not my thing but apparently i was exhausted from our whirlwind schedule. Anyway, nothing exciting. We have seen numerous people in arm slings and just ran into a woman in a ...

What a nice surprise

... believe our luck. It was so nice. Still, warm and crystal clear water on sandy beaches. We had a quick swim but knew we had to leave to get to Avignon on time. We then decided that if we found a campsite that was open we would stay. The first 2 we came to were closed and we were sad...but around at st clair beach one was open! Woo hoo!!!! 2 very happy girls. That night we played in the sand like kids ...

LOST & FOUND IN MARSEILLES- BLUE BALLS & ALL

Marseilles is a great city to get lost in. It may even be a great city to find yourself in. Streets branch off at acute angles that leave buildings on corners sucking in their bellies and hanging on for dear life. They probably mark the spots where some ancient forebear- let's call him 'Desmond’- manned a barrow in the marketplace and the rest is history. The grid plan came later or elsewhere. This is more like a ...

VISIONS OF MARSEILLES

... scorned, and this is a company that even moved into ex-PM Taksin’s Thailand. That takes some cojones muy grandes, amigo, about the size of oranges; you should see them suckers. This is important, not so much for this week as for the future, since I’m considering spending time here. If I’m ever going to ‘get French,’ it’ll be here, or southern France at least. I’ve seen one restaurant in the mall with ‘ ...

It's been Toulon but it's worth it!!

... take on Salsa with some moves...... Nello, Rob, George, actually the whole of Nevisport you'll have seen them before the famous ROBOT DANCE!!! Check out the pictures. We have now moved onto Cannes, home of the gorgeous people. So I'm going to go and get these bites sorted and reduce the swelling so I can go mingle with them....... See you later, Take Care Heather and Jamie xx

The longest ferry ride in the world

... she spoke some English. I was thinking she was about 25 or so, she had a couple of school books with book cov**s...I thought maybe book cov**s in college are still cool in Europe. Aft** a few minutes I asked h** if she was in Univ**sity. She said in broken English, "No, the one aft** that" so I was thinking grad school of some kind. Aft** I kept asking what kind, she said, "the kind you go to when you turn 17"!!! Holly ****, this chick is 17, and in high school ...

Living It Up On The French Riviera

... found something that would suffice and decided to head down to Nice's beach. The biggest disappointment in Nice, while far less glamorous than its neighbour Cannes, is probably the beach. While there is lots of it, the beach is covered in large, smooth pebbles which are incredible hard to walk on let alone sit comfortably. The silver lining on this seemingly dark cloud is that the water here is incredibly blue and clear, so if you can forget about the rocks, you might be able to enjoy yourself!
