    After arriving in Guangzhou, we quickly got directed to a counter for those that would be making transfers. We had been told by Devona earlier in our trip that China Southern Airlines would provide a free hotel room for you if your layover was more than 8 hours. Since there were three of us, we were actually entitled to three rooms. Pretty sweet deal!     Woke up early on the Sunday for my mountain hike. In China, the name of every big hill seems to end in 'shan', which means mountain. When I ask my students what they are doing at the weekend, it's quite common for them to say 'I'm climbing a mountain'... Confused me at first! The hikes up these 'shan' hills are difficult, but they are definitely not mountains, something to do with the translation into English though means that they are called mountains. ...

    ... would be easy to find - well, the metro was easy to use because it was in pinyin as well as Mandarin, but once I emerged from the underground I had no idea! Wandered around for a while, down some lovely little streets with trees on either side almost forming a tunnel - I would see a lot of these here. The shops were selling very ornate things, like Buddhas, fans, and wall hangings. I didn't mind that I couldn't find the temple at that moment, it was nice just exploring ...
