    ... Host families were invited, but only mine and the ones from Hangzhou came along. There was a speech from the boss of Lopair, then a speech from the Lopair host, and then each family had to give a speech "sharing their cultural experience of having a foreigner in their house". During these speeches, the au pairs were told we could chat amongst ourselves. We all ended up moving over to the play area where the kids were and half whispering to each other, half playing ...

    ... therefore it's inhabitants must be. Ms Liang and Mr Yao said to me ages ago "London people, dress smartly, they're rich, nice". I just nodded along. It's the same with this over-used term "cultural difference". A host family can't just be a horrible family, the reason you don't get on with them isn't because of personality clashes, it's because of "cultural differences".
