... sailors were ****** off that the local wasn’t open, so they started throwing rocks towards the bar. One of the rocks landed in a small shrine (to Our Lady of Mount Carmel) which was hanging outside the bar. The stone broke the glass of the frame, but didn’t touch the portrait itself, and remained lodged in the glass even though there were strong winds. Ladies of the Evening were a prominent feature of the street, there to assist the servicemen in, ahem, relaxing after their many days at sea. The street was lively from the early nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century, when conservative Catholicism was reborn in a newly independent Malta, and servicemen started to leave the island. ... the fun task of buying a new kettle since the one we had had broken, then we went to the amazing DVD shop where you can rent new films for only €1 a night - bargain!
